bansheexj Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 ANYONE TRY MAKING THERE OWN A ARMS? I'VE BUILT BUMPERS, ROLL CAGES, AND CONTROL ARMS FOR MY JEEPS. IT LOOKS PRETTY EASY. BESIDES I'LL GET TO TRY OUT MY NEW MANDREL BENDER. IF ANYONE HAS ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREAT. Quote
Meat Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 sounds like a fun project. Aftmkt arms come in either mild steel or chromoly, go chromoly if you got the tig to weld em. Make a jig so both sides are IDENTICAL, they gotta be perfectly identical. Quote
SuperChris Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 We have done quite a lot of welding chromoly with a MIG and it works great. We make nerf bars and weld up cracks in frames and cages for my 250 Outalw Kage Kart all the time with no problems. Quote
badcompany Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 What wire are you using to weld chromoly with a MIG? Quote
Meat Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 What wire are you using to weld chromoly with a MIG? yea good question. I was under the impression you HAD to tig chromoly. Quote
badcompany Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 I heard that it wasnt exactly necessary, but it was best to tig it. I dunno though. Quote
racer Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 there is a huge post in a dezert forum about this. ill try to find it and get you the wire make/model along with the gas requirement. i dont think it used 100% argon. Quote
racer Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 (edited) here it is!!!!!. kind of a tig vs. mig debate. good info though. Edited March 2, 2005 by therail Quote

MonkeyBoy Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 There is a lot more to it than just making some bends and welds. There are many angles in there that need to be addressed. Months are sprent on R&D before a good set of a arms come out. If you want to do it, do it, but don't expeact to trump what Doug Roll took 20 years to learn. Quote
Lepew Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 Some good fab skills is all you need to build a good set. They might not be race proven but how many of us are Kory Ellis. The mig tig thing, my opinion Mig works fine til you get to the thin wall tubings then you will start to get undercuting or cold lapping. Where the line is drawn between choosing one or the other is dependent on the experience of the welder and the project. Quote
