My went to install reed spacers on his shee, but fell victim to the dreaded Yamaha Strip.

 

He stripped the threads where the reeds go into the jugs.

 

I also fell victim to the strip when I drained my coolant for the first time and the bolt you loosen to drain the coolant out of the jug stripped when I went to put it back in.

 

I guess thats why the Clymer Manual has a section on retapping threads.

 

Has any else had these problems. Is it just poor craftmanship?

 

Its just a 30min reed spacer job turned into a nightmare!!

really blows!,sucks, stinks, it's a drag, no fun,

 

oh well may the Banshee Gods be with everyone when they do simple bolt-on projects peace. :confused:

Sounds like you are putting a little to much pressure on the end of your wrench. Those little 6 mm screws don't take very much torque to be tight.

Never heard of the "yamaha strip" but then again I don't use a cheater bar on 6mm bolts. Follow the torque values for the particular size bolt and you will never have problems unless the guy before you wrecked things first.

I've had various bolts strip that were installed FROM THE FACTORY. Mainly the screws that hold the plastic on. Yamaha's fasteners are junk imho...replace everything you can with something else, like black oxide cap screws.

you should do a thread on fasteners. what strength which ones are and stuff.

My friends blaster did the same thing when we were putting the engine back to gether. Top right reed cage bolt. Not sure if we did it or the prevous owner. We had to retap it and get a bigger bolt. Dam junk metal. :angry:

Sadly another bad combo is aluminum + stainless bolts. If the threads are nice and clean you will be okay, but over torque them once and you're in Shit City about %80 of the time.

 

And SSandDemon...I've thrown my fair share of wrenches across the shop doing simple mantainence lol.... But you are spot on when you say not to over torque the screw, but I don't think Yamaha adheres to that rule. When I had my flywheel lightened, I had to take the whole damned bike to the engine shop to have them take it off. He hammered on it with an impact for about 5 minutes. It eventually came off but he mentioned he had never seen one put on that tight. He axed me if I had it off before...nope... factory fresh torque values on that one.
