trail rider Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Could somebody tell me what kind of gear case oil this sounds like? Its white and kinda think, kinda looks and feels like white out. I was gonna change the case oil in my banshee sometime but I don't know what kind of oil the previous owner was using. I think it is a thick 80w oil or somethin similar? Quote
05bansh Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 I've never heard of a thick white oil. I use the Belray 80w. It looks just like tranny oil. Quote
bogart Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 water or coolant will change the color of the oil.i quess we would have to see it Quote
trail rider Posted February 22, 2005 Author Report Posted February 22, 2005 Is it normal after you ride around a little and the engine gets up to operating temperature for the case to build up pressure? Like when I unscrew the filler cap it releases pressure. Quote

Like when I unscrew the filler cap it releases pressure. 328067[/snapback] The white oil is from coolant leaking into the case or water entering the breather tubes but since you said there is pressure when you unscrew the dipstick, your breathers are plugged. I think there are 2 breathers. One is between the rear motor mount bolt by the swingarm and the other is up front by the water pump cover. {as I recall } Quote
Yaxy Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 I agree with bogart, Sounds like you have coolant in your oil. This is bad!, drain and flush. As far a s crank pressure you should not here any pressure being relived when you remove the filler dipstick. Check to see if your vent hose in back by the engine mount and down by the water pump is pugged Chris Quote
RBD Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Water mixed with oil in a gear box will make a very disgusting whitish look stuff. Quote
H250RHATER Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 are u sure the guy didnt just bust a load in it and hope it would hold up it does sound like tranny mixin with coolant though Quote

The coolant level in the tank under the seat has been going down after a while and the oil level in the gear case is higher than when I got it. So what would go wrong to cause water to leak into the gear box? a gasket or seal or what? Is it something easy to fix or do I need to take it somewhere? Quote
ssanddemon Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Pull off the clutch side cover and replace the water pump shaft seal and then unplug the two case vents. When the trans heats up, the coolant in the oil will turn to steam and pressurize the case if the vents are plugged. I'm thinking there's no way a head gasket will give this symptom, gotta be the water pump seal. Quote
ssanddemon Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 And yes, it's easy. Two hrs. max for a rookie. Details in your shop manual. Maybe take this opportunity to upgrade to an aluminum water pump impeller. The OEM plastic one is a time bomb waiting to ruin your weekend- WHEN (not if) it comes apart. Quote
trail rider Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Posted February 23, 2005 I found the problem ! The clutch side cover gasket was ripped around the round metal tube where the coolant flows. Oh yea and it already has a billet water impeller haven't found the two case vents yet. I've looked all in my clymer's manual but it doesn't show them. do they have like a hose going to them or something? Quote
trail rider Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Posted February 23, 2005 Could somebody post a picture of the crankcase vents? i've looked around again and still couldnt find where they are! thx Quote
Holyman Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Here you go... between the rear engine mount tabs and the small tube above the water pump... Quote
trail rider Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Posted February 23, 2005 those are it? Dang, if it were a snake it would have bit me in the face Those hoses on mine are clear. I took them apart on the tee handle thing and blew through them. I just thought that those hoses had to do with coolant cause once of those hoses goes to the overflow bottle. I think the reason It was releasing pressure like that was because it had coolant leaking into the oil when ever it would run and it just built up to fast for the pressure to escape out the vent hoses. I ended up almost draining a gallon of thick white shit out of my gear case, and at the very start alot of water drained out before the oil did. Quote
