I'm thinking about getting one, but can't really decide which is better. From what I understand here are the pros:

YFZ450

electric start

more power

450R

better handling

seperate oil for crank & tranny

smoother carb

I'm looking to get one used and I've found a couple in my price range at cycletrader.com. I'll be riding everything from trails to MX to gravel roads to sand pits.

if you can you need to ride both for a little bit. i think that youll find the yfz handles better, jumps better, and has quite a bit more power. the 450r is kinda tall, tippy and in my opinion down in the power department. the front end is very light which kinda makes jumping them a bitch. lets just say this, my buddy has a 450r. we ride trails, climb hills and mx. everytime we ride he says, " i shoulda bought a yfz". he has ridden ours and actually likes our better after 5 minutes of riding than he does his 450r. plus, who wants to kick the fuckin thing all the time? his doesnt start all that easily when cold thats for sure. my yfz sure fires right up tho with the push of a button...

I found a YFZ for sale about 11 hours from here for $4500. If I can get financing I think I may get it. It's a dealership selling it and he said they let a guy use it for a month for racing, but everything is in great shape. I was actually calling about another bike, but he said it was sold then he mentioned this one. What do you guys think?

4500 is not too bad but 11 hours away? surely there is something closer.

A friend of mine was telling me shipping shouldn't be over $200. Think there's anything to that? I guess I'll have to call him tomorrow and find out.

I'm of the opinion that the YFZ450 will own the 450R on an MX track.

and in the drag, and in the sand, and youre chick can ride it with out worrying about hot start or compression release.

I may have another option. I might be able to get a Cannondale Blaze with extras including a steering stabilizer, beadlocks, Ohlins shocks, HMF pipe, steering stem for $3500. The motor is blown but the price includes a crate motor.

I pick the YFZ, because I own one, the seat is harder, and thumb throttle is a biotch, but the power is worth it, I just got a thumb extender, and got a seat cover with one inch of foam. I have satten on a 450r, it was kind of weird to my YFZ, just feels alot different, my cousin, who I told to get a YFZ, doesnt really like my YFZ, so he sat on this guys honda in the cam we were staying at, and he liked the hondas postion, so he is going to try to get one. Also, why would you say the hondas carb is smoother, the yfz carb is actually smoother, its a FCR, and their one of the best name brand carb. I would think if honda changed the carb on the 450r to a FCR it would probably keep up with a YFZ stock, and piped vs piped. Theres my opnion on this subject.

The FCR on the YFZ is technically a better carb. The CRF450 bike uses a FCR as well. The one on the 450r isn't bad though. The 450's are a tad tippy, well when compared to my 50" banshee. Overall, I think the 450r is built better, and the suspension is not as rigid and it doesn't feel twitch to me like the YFZ did. I think the YFZ would own the Honda, but get the YFZ in something more technical and the Honda will shine. Either one will be a good choice, if your gonna have the ladies riding it, an electric start might be a good thing.
