" You will be a lean, mean, fighting machine. Good Luck. They say you never forget your drill instructor. Master Cheif Dorflin mean little SOB

thanks i have signed up to be an aviation mech. i love to work on cars and stuff now so i figured it would be better to work on multi-million dollar aircraft

but i am starting to think that after my 5 years i might go be infantry

and i chose the marines because there is no dought that they are the best trained, most respected, and just flat out bad asses in the world i am not dissin on any other armed forces, but i just told myself that if i am goin into the service i am going to be a marine.........my parents didnt want me to at first, they were all like go to the army it pays more, and go to the airforce if you want to work on planes. but this doesnt have anything to do with money or anything else

its all about pride, and like i said before......there is nobody better anywhere in the world than a marine!

I have ALOT of respect for ANYONE that wants to enter the Armed Forces during a time of obviously dangerous duty possabilities.

Anyways...I am a Marine - from 89-94...MOS was 6057/6097 Aviation Elec. Hydraulics & Aviation Metalsmith/Composite Repair/Fabrication. My assigned Aircraft was the F-18 Hornet...It was a kickass tour and experiance..One that I would trade for nothing. After my tour in the Marines I bounced from Contract to Contract in the States working on many differant MilitaryAircraft/Contracts. Then in 96' I picked up a contract working in Kuwait for the US Navy/Contractor helping the Kuwait AirForce bring their troups up to speed with the F-18 Aircraft Maintnance and inspections/Saftey etc and such...It was suppose to only last for 2 years maximum...Well guess what...I left in 2000 and I have several close friends that are still there doing the same thing...Basically the Kuwaities would rather have Americans run the show...hahaha...It was a great exp...I left Aviation and got into Information Tech. so I could get good steady work close HOME and start my family...

So...The Marines can set your life up to be pretty interesting if you so choose. Much luck to you in Boot and all that...If you go to MCRD SanDiego and run into SSgt. Hogie tell him HELLO from Brad...haha...He is up for Gunney, and has been doing Drill Instructor duty for several years now...I guess he can't seem to get enough. He comes from the Aviation Community "F-18 PowerPlants/Engines" as well...If you end up having to stay on base or you have free time on base you may want to look him up. His name is SSgt. Keith Hogie....

Cheers

Marines are the shit man. And if thats your cup of tea than semper fi to you my brother. Every time I deploy alot of marines tell me they should have joined the air force. But the hard core guys are probably the proudest (and rightfully so) guys I have ever met. I always end up hanging out with the marines everywhere I go. They dog on me cause the Air Force doesnt deploy as much but if you want to you can. Im in the air force for almost 5 years now.(5 in April). I have been to Kuwait(6 months begening of OIF), Iraq (3 months middle of OIF), And im on my way to Afganistan for an undetermend amount of time VERY soon. Those guys are gone from 6 months to 18 months in 1 shot. Good luck man.

Just so you know, all armed services pay the same, and very few people in the Air Force work on or with air planes. Also as a whole the Marines are as you say the Baddest but, every service has a special forces devision and even the Air Force special forces (TAC-P, Combat controller, Pararescue) Will whoop alot of Marines asses.

I am pretty sure he is referring to all the other branches handing out HUGE summs of money in the form of a signing bonus...Or at least thats how I percieved it...

BTW...There is always someone that can whoop someones elses ass. Marines "This meaning EVERY SINGLE MARINE" gets more specific combat training than any other branch hands down...That goes for Clerks, Band Members, basket weavers and what have you...Hence the many weeks of training required.

As an Aircraft Mechanic I recall all the AirForce cats that were at the Kuwait Base "I was working the contract at" being totally miffed that myself and another guy were able to take a Jet out and Repair & Test the aircraft with both engines operating at normal conditions from start to finish, just the two of us...Where the Air Force is more micro managed in that they have several differant crews for differant tasks as appossed to differant systems...It was kinda wierd when they were explaining it to me...You are gonna be getting some excellent Aviation exp. in the Marines...The Navy has a great program as well...They are basically one in the same when it comes to aviation by way of basic policy.

I think Marine Corps Aviation will be a great career for you. In the Marines you will get to work on the whole aircraft generally. The Air Force mechanics are set up more as specialist such as Hydraulics specialist, electrical specialist etc. The Marine Corps has a wide variaty of aircraft that you may work on too. Marines have fighters, cargo and many helos too.

I also have my A&P license, that I went to school and got after I got off active duty. I love working on planes and you will too. There is nothing like the smell of jet fuel in the morning. :headbang:

I'm in the Marine Corps. My MOS is 6432 which is Aviation Electrician. I've only been in for a little over a year. There is a variety of aircraft to work on but you pick the general MOS and then get stuck where the Marine Corps needs you. There is an "I" level, which I am and an "O" level. "O" level bubbas work outside in all climates on the birds themselves. Us "I" level guys stay in temp controlled "vans" (more like shipping containers) and work on the gear the "O" level guys bring us.

If you go into avionics or aircraft mechanic you'll most likely be going to Pensacola, FL. It was pretty nice there until the hurrican came through. I was there when it hit and we all evacuated to Albany Geogia to stay at a logistics base.

If I were you I'd choose avionics over the mechanic side. It's a little more advanced and your schooling is longer but a lot of your school will transfer to college credits down the road. You'll learn about that when you hit the fleet though.

I work on gear from harriers, prowlers, and C-130s. A few of my buddies I was in school with got to work on the President's fleet HMX-1. Pretty sweet deal. Avionics can take you a LOT of different routes.

Anything you choose though good luck. You're going to hate it sometimes and really love it others. Ooh-Rah.

Navy 98-present. I am a Aviation Electrician. AE2 to be exact. If you have any questions about the rate or job let me know. i have worked on SH-60B's and now E-6B's at Tinker AFB, OK. I would also suggest you go avonics, you do get alot of transferable credits.

Nothing against the TRON guys..."AE's, Tweets, whatever"...In the Marines they get stuck at Lance Cooly or Corpral ALOT...So if you don't mind having a short career it is a great way to go...The thing is that the MOS is very full and also competitive with not much turnover...I knew several guys that did 6 year contracts and got out as Lcpl. and Cpl...That boys is BS...It may have changed in the last 15 years, but these things tend not to fix themselves.

Myself...I made Sgt. in 3years...In the Marines that is pretty quick...I could have picked up staff in 5 with the right billets and schools...But never had any intentions of a career after the first few years in I decided to take on other challenges.

Good Liuck with whatever you choose to do...And to all the other cats in right now...Be Safe & Thanks...

Unfortunately that is still the same. Especially with the 6432 MOS. Most after their five year contract leave as Corporals. A few make it to Sergeant but most are second term Marines. It's always possible to make a lat-move or take on another billet though later on.

If you do 4, 6, 8 or 20 years in the service just remember you need to get a job when you are done. A marine may kick my ass (I am in the Air Force). but in 20 years I will be gratefull the Air Force spent money to make me smarter.

In the long run, you will be to old to kick someones ass, so all you have is your smarts. You pick what training you want.

Why do you say that the Airforce makes you smarter? The Airforce in my MOS was at the same base as I was (Pensacola). We have gear that goes in birds just like you do. Do you mean to say that we just bubblegum shit together and throw it back in the bird or what? Do tell.
