broke Posted December 24, 2004 Report Posted December 24, 2004 It's -2 here today with -30 wind chills. The truck has started fine up until now, but I don't want to keep starting it when the oil is this cold. I have been all over the front end of this thing and can't find the plug. I am hoping somebody can give me a little insight before I make the trip back to the dealer to see if it's even on here. The window sticker says we paid for it, I just don't want to look like an idiot in the dealership if I just keep overlooking it. Thanks in advance. 05 Excusion Quote
Fireman-hott Posted December 24, 2004 Report Posted December 24, 2004 its not gonna hurt it to start it with cold oil sheesh man its not a diesel. Our boss at the mill has one they do have block heaters in them just can't remember off hand where it gets plugged in as I never plug the damned thing in. newer vehicles run a lighter oil anyway which would make it run fine in the cold. Technically you are able to turn it on, let it sit for ~30sec to get the oil to the top, than drive off. I would go over 2500-3000 rpms before its nice and warmed up though. Quote
sredish Posted December 24, 2004 Report Posted December 24, 2004 Try looking under the bumper in the center area. There's a little gap area in the center between the bumper and the lower plastic dam, and its usually stuff in there on the 6.0's. I actually keep mine zip tied in that gap area. I'd take a pic, but it's too f'in cold outside.... Quote
sredish Posted December 24, 2004 Report Posted December 24, 2004 How's this for a pic from the kitchen window? That's where mine is. Its hanging because it was plugged in, but it's usually tucked up in that gap. Quote
broke Posted December 25, 2004 Author Report Posted December 25, 2004 its not gonna hurt it to start it with cold oil sheesh man its not a diesel. Yes, it is. Thanks Sredish, I do believe they have forgot yo install mine. Quote
BitchenBanshee Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 Yes, it is.Thanks Sredish, I do believe they have forgot yo install mine. 297750 Some diesels won't have them... IT's considered an option. If it does have it, it would be in the front as previously said.. Quote
red ore Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 Ive seen them tucked up really tight under the hood.....find the heater (in a soft plug) and TRY to follow the cord. Im not sure if thats possible though. If they didnt install it, and you paid for it, I would say a huge hissy fit is in order. Try this morning, I got up to go to work at about 8 am, and it was -27 degree's with -38 windchill...........I waited till after 2 pm to go, it warmed up to a whole -16 degrees! My truck (1996 Ford j-9000) has an n-14 cummins, and it was a bit slow to start!! LOL Quote
kotin6 Posted December 25, 2004 Report Posted December 25, 2004 It replaces your freeze plug. I know it sounds dumb but I was stationed in Minot North Dakota and trust me I had one on evry vehicle I owned while I was there. Quote
bigtreads Posted December 26, 2004 Report Posted December 26, 2004 mine was taped to the back of one of the brackets alittle to the center and behind the pasenger front tow hook. I looked for at least an hour to find it - it was totaly covered by black tape. Once I found it you had to be a contortionist to get the stupid thing out. I plug mine in from freezing on down - but then Im anal with my truck Quote
Banshee~ Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 I'd take a pic, but it's too f'in cold outside.... 297570 panzie Quote
broke Posted December 27, 2004 Author Report Posted December 27, 2004 Thanks guys, I found it. It was hidden very well right behind and above the passenger tow hook. I did have to be a "contortionist" to get to it as I was warned. Thanks again Quote
jinx44 Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 Guys in my family have been driving Ford Diesels since 1983. All have block heaters. Its not an option. It seems that every year model, the cord is tied up a different place. It took me an hour to find the one on my '96. My '99 was tied up to the A/C high pressure line. The best part about plugging it up, you're heater is already warm when you start it!!!! Anyone had any fuel gelling problems yet? I had a tractor gell on Christmas eve. I have yet to gel a Powerstroke, but the older 6.9's and 7.3's where the fuel filter was on the firewalll would gel all the time. Quote
boonman Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Mine was dangling out, but I didn't have it tied out. It slipped inside the bumper, and that's where it has stayed. I have seen unassisted starts on my truck from as low as -10 so far. Ford allegedly quacks a -20 unassisted start. I'll test it. At the ski area, it gets that low on a regular basis. I can't plug my truck in there. We'll see. I wait about 30 seconds, and fire it up. Romp romp romp, she bangs away. Then sounds like an F-16 for about 20 minutes....... Anyways, point being, I run Rotella T fleet oil all year round. Purrs like a kitten. Now, I don't go flippin the chip to 140 and pounding it, but I can get in and drive after a 5 minute warm up. Glad to hear you found the cord...... Quote
sredish Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Now, I don't go flippin the chip to 140 and pounding it, but I can get in and drive after a 5 minute warm up. Glad to hear you found the cord...... 299164 Haha, mine DOES NOT come off of 125 at all, unless it's icy of course. Hell, at the 60 horse setting, it fells likes it's only firing on 6. boonman Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Ain't that funny SRedish??? I kick mine into stock for shits and giggles just to reminisce on the old days. For a split second, untill I get all disgusted with it... I don't like the high settings when the engine is cold, it gets some injector noise, and some clatter from the advanced timing.... I normally run around on 50 or 75. If someone fucks with me, I flip it to 140, and try to put my foot through the floor. It's fun..... Quote
