MIABanshee Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Hey guys I was putting my steering bearings in and going to screw on the gold lockplate and I guess I messed up the threads in the frame when I was putting the bearing in. Now the lockplate wont screw in.... What could I do to fix this or do you need the lockplate or no. "lower steering bearing retainer " Thanks Quote
boonman Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 That is absolutely something that is needed. Unless you like the thought of the steering stem pulling right out? It's kind of what holds it in. Imagine yourself yanking on the bars to pull the front end up, and you fly off the back of the machine, handlebars and steering stem in hand as your bike goes careeming down the trail...... Prolly not that severe of an outcome, but something similar would surely happen. I am not quite sure what you could do. There isn't a helicoil.... Perhaps welding the retainer in there? It would take a knowledgeable TIG welder, and some time to do it. And it may prematurely trash the bearing... That collar has to be in there.... Quote

Redlined Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 (edited) Is there enough "meat" left for you to run a tap in the hole to clean up the threads? That is what I suggest. The tap for that hole is not going to be cheep, but it should work fine. (Note: don't use a drill to run in the tap ) This is something that should be done after powder coating anyway. That stuff gets everywhere. You should run a tap through each hole and clean all fits (Metal to metal and bearing fits). Edited December 20, 2004 by Redlined Quote

I think I'll give that a shot. Ill take it over to my boys machine shop and give it a try. Quote
Ducman Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 It may be harder to find in your size but they do make thread cleaners, like a tap but designed to clean threads. They are designed to follow old threads and less likely to grab and cut a new set of threads. Quote

DIRTBIKEZ Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 I recruited this guy MIA from BT, I'm glad you guys could help him out and show him what BHQ is all about. Quote
boonman Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 a tap in that size is going to cost hundreds of dollars.... Quote
PUSH THE THROTTLE Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 I'd buy a new frame before I spent hundreds of dollars on a tap. If you could find a shop with one it'd be your easiest out. Quote

So i just ended up getting some tack welds. should work fine, thanks for the help Quote
DUNEDEMON Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 I'm suprised no one suggested the use of a thread file...May have worked? Quote
J.J. Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 I'm suprised no one suggested the use of a thread file...May have worked? 296221[/snapback] Thread file should work, however, finding one for internal threads isn't easy. Quote
