sjgYFZ200 Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 hey guys, well i was out riding last weekend. as im going along i notice a sqeaking every so often. it sounded like metal on metal. well i got off and checked everything, didnt see anything, and kept going(bad choice...) but anyways, i finnaly get out there and its gotten worse. someone out there said it sounded like axle bearings, and he rocked the machine back and forth. it definatly moves on the axle, about a quarter inch? so anyways i got it home without any more abuse and now this weekend im ready to rip it apart and put the new bearings in. im hoping that riding it with busted bearings didnt blow out the carrier, thats like 200 bucks. does anyone have any tricks or tips on replacing these? thanks.. -stevo Quote
RNBRAD Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 Check this link, very informative with pics included done on a Banshee. http://www.bluetraxx.com/axle_bearing_install_1_new.htm Quote
squish Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 Put a zerk fitting in the carrier. Drill a hole in the sleeve so next time the axle comes out easier. Quote
sjgYFZ200 Posted November 5, 2004 Author Report Posted November 5, 2004 is it hard to get the axle out? Quote
MotulMonsta Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 Naa, I doubt you ruined the carrier..stock ones are made of steel..so long ad the outer race seats in tight you'll be fine. Them stock carriers are pretty tough. Aluminum on the otherhand....yes it's lighter, but a shot bearing can f*ck it all to hell. Quote
ROOFCOCK Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 ALRIGHT LETS BE REALISTIC IF THE BEARINGS CAME APART YOU HAVE A CHORE AHEAD OF YOU. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF AXLE REMOVAL. HOWEVER IF THEY ARE THAT WASTED IT MAY STILL BE CHORE. IF THE AXLE DOES NOT COME OUT EASY DONT GIVE UP JUST KEEP BANGING IT. MINE TOOK A TEN POUND SLEDGE HAMMER AND ABOUT 100 BLOWS WITH IT AND MY BEARINGS WERE NOT IN BAD SHAPE BUT I REBUILT THE BIKE AND CHANGED EVERY BEARING SO IT HAD TO GO. THE LINK POSTED GIVES GOOD INFO IN BEST CASE SCENARIO. BUT IT NEVER WORKS THAT WAY FOR ME SO HOPEFULLY THIS HELPS IF UPON REMOVAL THE BEARINGS GIVE TROUBLE DONT WASTE YOUR TIME BUY A DREMEL AND SOME CUTTING STONES..... THE BEARINGS HAVE A CENTER, BALLS, AND AN OUTER. IF THEY DONT COME, OUT BEAT THE CENTER OUT AND FIRE UP THE DREMEL AND CUT THE OUTER IN 2 OR 3 PLACES BEING CAREFULL NOT DAMAGE THE CARRIER. THEN FROM THE OPPOSITE SIDE USE A LONG PUNCH AND SMACK THOSE PUPPIES OUT. NOW FOR THE NEW BEARINGS DONT BUY STOCK THEY COST TOO MUCH. IF YOU NEED HELP WITH WHERE TO GET THEM PM ME AND I WILL POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. ANY WAY TAKE THE NEW BEARINGS HOPEFULLY THEY ARE DOUBLE SEALED. TAKE A SMALL POINTED TOOL I USE SHOP TWEEZERS, AND CAREFULLY REMOVE THE SEALS (DO NOT PIERCE THE SEALS) NOT TO "put grease around the bearings" BUT TO PACK THEM FULL OF GREASE. THEN PUT THE SEALS BACK IN. WITH AXLE (BEARING) SEALS COAT THEM WITH GREASE AS WELL. AS FAR AS THE LINK GOES ALL OTHER INFO IS GREAT. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE PM ME AND I WILL HELP, AS I HAVE DONE THIS AND MANY OTHER BEARINGS ON MANY BIKES WITH NO TROUBLE Quote
