FireHead Posted October 22, 2004 Report Posted October 22, 2004 My wife is an accountant (getting her BA in 2 months) and I'm self employed, so she knows how to run a business, and I know how to be broke. It just comes with the territory.First off, every dollar has a place. This might sound stupid, but do this. Write out your entire monthly expenses. NOT your trips to McDonalds, gas for your 70 chevelle (funnest damned car I ever owned btw....70 SS 396 400TH 12 bolt) and the strip clubs. Then add up what it takes to get by each and every month. Subtract that amount from what your net income is each month. It should have a positive number. Take that number and decide how much you need for gas to work, and maybe a few extras. THIS number is your allowance, the rest goes into savings. If you run out of personal money too damned bad. It takes a bit to stick to it, and i used to run out of cash by wednesday, but that happens when you're buying shit you don't really need. Now, I can survive the week on 1/2 of what I get because I stopped buying a drink here and there, or a sandwich or what ever... and I just pocket that now. I put it into a "drag bike fund" for this winter and thats all its there for. I even have a change jar that typically has around $150 in it every 6-8 months. That doesn't sound like much over 6-8-months, but go cash that shit in, and you have $150 in your hands right there. Budgeting is trickey, and you have to stick to it. If you waiver, it won't work. Have your wife become an accountant. lol.... I used to get a kick out of budgeting my life like that. I still do it too. It was always like competition with myself to see how little I could spend. Of course, no I don't watch the little things as much, but I still keep a pretty good eye on them. The trouble I have had lately is that I buy alot of books related to my job and when I add my all my books together at the end of every month it freaks me out. Quote

rjvoight Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 I cant understand what me and the wife are really doing wrong. We dont go and blow money like crazy, only have one credit card, got a cheap trailer house with free renta week. You guys aer not doing anything wrong from what you have said. It comes and goes. We have been married 8 years and do pretty well together, DINK, Double income no kids, but sometimes things just take a dump. My Bronco took a crap, fixed that, the wifes car took a dump, fixed that. No big deal, kinda wiped out our savings but we were not to worried. Then another 300.00 goes out to my dad....long story and a couple little things and wham. Broke. Yesterday I dropped the cell phone now it is in two pieces and i don't have two hundred bucks to replace it. Keep your chin up and most importantly, DO NOT LET MONEY INTERFERE WITH YOUR RELATIONSHIP!!!! If you guys find yourself fighting about it, point it out and stop it. Fighting won't make more money it just makes more stress. RJV Quote
Blue Duece Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 every payday put something aside and dont spend it, start a savings account and never withdraw from it allways add to it, forget its there, before you know it you have a decent little chunk of change, but it doesnt matter cause you cant touch it, i did that 30 years ago i checked the balance last week and it was up to 65 grand, both my kids in collage with that...... just like throwing your change in a bottle, id put 50 here 100 there even 10 bucks sometimes, but the whole time intrest adds up, its only like a percent now but i rember when it was 5% on a savings account, youd be suprised how fast it grows Quote

Its hovering around .75% here....unless you put it in a CD for 6 years, then you might get 3%. Quote
watkins Posted October 24, 2004 Report Posted October 24, 2004 One thing I have noticed.. at least for me is that the more money I make the less money I have... I cant quite figure it out really because when I made less I spent alot more it seems and never was really broke... these days I am always just tapped out. Quote

dnhyoung Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 I agree with you guys about budgetting. My wife and I give ourselves an allowance of $40 a week from our regular pay, but if we get overtime, that goes in the play fund, wether a camping trip or parts for the bike. i broke my elbow a few years back, and invested the settlement money in 2nd mortgages earning 12-14%. Beats the stock market, and is secured by someones property. the only bad things about mutual funds is you usually have to invest for 10-15 years to get that kind of an average return, Atleast from my experience.........
