I know some of you guys have repaired your cases with JB Weld but how well does it hold up. I broke my chain this morning and took a chunk of case out just below the sprocket at the bottom. It was just enough that all the oil drained. Can I fill that hole with JB and call it good or is it time for another case? Here are some pics.

I repaired a similar case crack w/ JB weld... BUT! You will have to drain all the oil and make sure its SPOTLESS clean. The cases I repaired were split at the time so it wasnt a big deal. I personally, would split the case to repair it... but thats me.

Its a day job to take it apart and put it together... worth the expense than the alternative.... Alternative being what would happen if you lost all tranny fluid while out riding... and you didnt know it....

The repair I made held great for 2 years of riding before changing cases... I only changed them due to having a spare set. The repair held fine and never leaked.

the machinist at my work also happens to do all of the tig welding and he has repaired fractures like that before with a tig. so if you are handy with tig go for it, if not i would find a damn good welder and have it tig'd up. shouldnt be a big deal.

Kenr74 I'm not just picking on you but I'm going to say this to everyone that has had a chain crack the cases. DON'T BE SO FREAKING CHEAP AND BUY TOP SHELF CHAINS aka... DID X-ring ATV or sim and replace the sprockets when they are worn. If you haven't priced a new set of cases you should. It's far cheaper to replace a 60 dollar chain and 50 bucks worth of sprockets every year than buy new cases every year. Don't buy aluminum rear sprockets as well unless you plan on replacing them very often. I went through a cheap rear sprocket in 3 rides. Steel rear sprockets are cheaper than aluminum and hold up better to the abuse. A case saver can save your cases but it's still not good to run your chain until it snaps or falls off the sprockets. Make sure you have the correct tension when you setup your new chain and sprockets and check it before every ride.

Well, thanks for the help guys. I have extra cases already so I'm going to give the JB a try and if it doesn't work I'll just switch cases.

Oh SDD,

This had nothing to do with chains or sprockets. Thanks for your opinion on JB Weld though. Some jackass rearended me and broke a nice chain and rear sprocket. Luckily that is all he broke on my bike. Before I could get off the gas it already sucked the chain through and broke the case.

Like banshee370 said, the repair area has to be spotless on both sides

You could also "V'' the edge and roughen up the area to give the JB more adhesion.

IMO as long as the crack hasn't propogated into the boss of the shiftshaft seal it should be ok.

You should also find the end of the fracture and arrest propogation by drilling the end of the crack with a small drill.

It could be welded by a pro as well.

Ken what brand of chain were you running? I seriously doubt a DID X-ring ATV chain would have broken if someone rear ended you but then again if it folded the sprocket it still could have knocked the chain off of it and cracked the case.

A case saver is cheaper than a chain! For anyone else out there thats not running one, learn from his mistake.

I still can't believe that some people have not put simple shit like that on there machines. All the money that people throw away on there shees buying useless stuf(like bling bling) and they won't spend 40 bucks on something that is more valueable than any piece of billet.

I did all of that stuff(case saver,high flow impeller,stiffer clutch springs,prodesign filter,etc)before I even added pipes.

Every one of the banshees weaknesses can be found on this board. If you didn't take advantage of it,than you only have yourself to blame.

We always have JB weld or other brand (MSR Racing is good) with us on extended dual sport motorcycle rides. We have had to repair cases many times while out in the sticks usually from crash damage and we have always made it home safely. Usually owners forget about the emergency repair and never have a problem. If you take your time and really clean the break you should be good FOREVER.

By the way I just installed a trick TM Designs plastic case saver on my Banshee at same time as my extended swing arm and it sure looks like it will do the job.

I agree!!! I needed a chain but patched it together with 2 masterlinks and drove it for a little but then snap! The bastard broke and cracked the case at the top of the front sprocket. I saved the pieces and got them welded back on, but I was lucky. No broken cogs in the transmission, no oil leaking from the case, and the sprockets were OK. 1 week later I bought a nice DID o-ring chain.

Too much torque on the banshees to be driving around with a half-assed chain.
