I was planning to split the case, to put in a stroker. Need some tips/tricks/advice. Since its open, what else can I do. Need some advice on case matching and anything else that should be done with a open case..

Case matching is when you match the bottom of your cylinder transfer ports, to the top of the case where they bolt on. Usually you cut a gasket to match the transfers on the bottom of the cylinder, then lay it on the top of the top case and mark the opening on the case. Then you open up the case to match the cylinders.

Pretty easy to do when you have the cases apart. I just used a Dremel type tool with a rotary file and ground right up to the lines I scribed on the case.

By the way Mrmann, thad bid I gave you on your cases wasn't just case matching. It was a total fillet weld and resculpture job of updraft ramps as well...didnt really know if you understood that...Jim

Thanks PassionRE, I figured it was so.. I've been so busy lately, I haven't had a chance to remove the engine. I just got a notice from my job. Next friday will be everyone's last day. They're gonna be out of buisness, btw the jugs will be sent out tomorrow (monday). what is the welding for? would i be able to do that myself? I have a welder. (trying to save some $$$, I will be unemployed by the end of the week) :( I would appreciate any info you can offer. I don't think i can afford to send you the case under the circumstances. Thanx for all the help.

I got my upper case back from jim a couple of weeks ago. He did the filet welding like he is talking about and it looks extremely trick. It is so much more than just case matching. Right below the transfers is now smooth for uninterupted airflow.

Any chance we could see some pictures of that "total fillet weld and resculpture job of updraft ramps"? Thanks

I love how people try and jack secrets from builders from just looking at pictures. There is a lot more to what professional builders do to these things than what a picture can tell you. How about instead of trying to copy some dudes picture you guys go out and try doing it yourself and see what happens. How do you think all the big builders learned. There's very little literature out there on the work these guys do and teaching yourself isn't exactly cake. Why do you think they charge so damn much for the work?

I pride myself in doing all my own work, and I've figured out a lot of little shit that makes pretty big differences by just trial and error. Yeah you might fuck some shit up from time to time, but that's part of the learning curve. I had centering springs on my shift fork shafts around the same time the "dunable override" transmission thing came out and that was one of the big things that makes those work. I figured out part of their little trick just saying to myself... I wonder what would happen if I stuck this in there...?

Instead of waiting for some magical picture that you all think is going to give you huge performance gains (if you think you can duplicate it) go out and do it yourself and let us know what happens. Besides, I kinda doubt very many people who would try and do something like this based on a picture have the skills needed to weld aluminum, and do it right.

Case matching is good for about 3-4HP. If you don't do it right you end up not getting the required lubrication to the main bearings. Take a look at the top case next time you have the cylinders off and you will see the hole that feeds/vents the main bearings. Will you notice the 3-4HP? Probably not unless your looking for every last 1/10 of a HP. Jet your bike wrong and you'll lose more than what case porting can provide.

So...You guys got pictures and detail but are not gonna share them right? Usually everybody helps each other out around here and shares their experiences to guide others...whats the difference in this case? That someone out there is making money off of it? If BHQers really had the time, patience, and money to trial and error everything we wouldn't be on the forum talking about banshees and asking questions, we'd be out grinding the shit out of our cylinders trying to port them the right way. If we knew whats involved and its too hard for us, we would send it out and pay for it to get done, like porting. Anyways BigRed keep your big secret to yourself, someone else will come along and share it...eventually.
