Justintoxicated Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Hey guys, I'm trying to decide what to do here. Im getting 33mm PWK's and I need to decide wether to switch to K&N clamp-ons or keep my 2->1 K&N with the airbox buy purchasing adapters? Right now I'm running no lid on the airbox anyways. my K&N is getting old as it is and I do not know if I need to replace it anyways or not. so far this is what I hav come up with for pro/cons... KEEP AIRBOX: pros: 1) helps to keep water put in the rare instance it is raining. 2) helps to support carbs (support from both sides) 3) might not need a new K&N air filter. cons: 1) Sand (or water) sometimes pile up or collects on the inside of the air box in sand storms, Actualy keeps sand in the air box K&N CLAMP ONS: pros: 1) More space to work on things, removes clunky airbox. 2) Easier Carb Adjustment. 3) don't have to worry about condition of old K&N cons: 1) loose support from the front of the carb. 2) No protection from water coming up from underneath. So what should I do?!?! Quote
banshdog Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Its like you listed......pros and cons both ways Ive mentioned it in other posts, If you do decide on the clamp ons, i have a set for sale with new outerwears on them....if you want them let me know, save you some money. Quote
knight_ripper Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 dont let the protection bother you....unless of course you hit some serious water. I just take it easy through the water and its not a problem. But sometimes I get sick of goin slow....I punch it through streams. Only twice in the 6 years that Ive been riding....has my engine bogged due to water on the filter. And I hit streams on every ride......unless of course Im at glamis or sand mountain. The only con is the weight of the carbs. Ive heard of them coming off. If I was gonna do it, I would want some kind of support under them. I just "Monster Garaged" mine. Using a saber saw, I cut away the box, just leaving the front on it....where the K&N attaches. Then I cut out the water bottle holder...cause your gonna need it. Unless your getting rid of the bottle all together. So, my K&N has all the support it needs and is getting all that extra air. I guess you can just ixnay the bottle and run the line down the radiator. I havent done it....cause my shee overheats and needs that water....but some ppl do it. Also, if I just ran dunes with me shee I would change to clamp-ons. Too many washboard trails here in Cali. Quote
Justintoxicated Posted May 14, 2004 Author Report Posted May 14, 2004 well i dunno I can't decide! Quote
Justintoxicated Posted May 15, 2004 Author Report Posted May 15, 2004 Anyne else have any feedback or opinions I can use to help ease my indecisiveness? Quote
FoxBansheeRacing Posted May 15, 2004 Report Posted May 15, 2004 Unless you ride in water and mud alot, I would suggest the clamp ons. Just like knight, I have never had a problem with the filter getting wet and bogging. I have tried both a K&N and a Uni foam filter and I prefer the Uni better. I could hit a puddle and it would bog with the K&N, but the foam filters hold up much better to water and mud, whereas the K&N's are supposedly the best choice for sandy riding. I guess its all about preference. Quote
Justintoxicated Posted May 16, 2004 Author Report Posted May 16, 2004 I mostly ride in the sand and needs lots airflow for the new setup so i'll be getting K&N's not a foam filter. I know the foam filters better, but htey need to be cleaned more frequently and also ristrict airflow. Quote
Indubitably Posted May 16, 2004 Report Posted May 16, 2004 Get the clamp ons, just make sure to keep the outerwears out of your stingers. I use zip ties and they work alright. One person on here suggested header wrap and i haven't tried it but it seems like it would wrok good. Quote
FoxBansheeRacing Posted May 16, 2004 Report Posted May 16, 2004 If foam filters restrict air flow its not enough to have to change jetting on. I switched from K&N to Uni and checked the plugs after each run and they looked the exact same the bike felt the exact same. Quote
Justintoxicated Posted May 27, 2004 Author Report Posted May 27, 2004 so where can I get K&N Clamp ons for 33mm carbs? I'm looking in the rocky mountain catalog but it says stock carbs only... Quote

If you don't like them, sell them and the try the airbox... I'm dead serious. Talk to walt. He can get them from k&k. Edited May 27, 2004 by fixitrod Quote
FoxBansheeRacing Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 You can get them for the 33mm's, you need to measure the filter side of the carb and find the diameter of it. It should be somewhere in between 2" and 2 1/2", then call up rocky mountain and ask what part number the X" K&N filter is and order it. Quote
Justintoxicated Posted May 27, 2004 Author Report Posted May 27, 2004 Damn well, I don't have the carbs yet....Anyone know? they are 33mm PWKs Quote
Banchetta Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Get some twin pods. Then you'll have both and decide from there. If you don't like them, then sell them. I thought about switching to the twin setup, but I got my stock box to work awesome. Just take some customizing. I have to pull my rear fenders off now to rejet, but I jet it in one day and don't worry about it...If you do get the twin pods, get the angled ones. The straight ones don't fit for shit and rub the exhaust on the left side....Like Rod said,Walter get them from K&K, Walter said they had them when I was at roostfest... Quote
