First off, what tools do I need and how do I get the flywheel off? Once I get that off I am thinking about getting a degree key, but I am worried about detenation. When I did a compression test I had 120# without holding the throttle open(I didnt know you had to). Will I be risking it if I advance the timing?

alba, magic racing is a couple places you can get a flywheel puller. just take the nut off the flywheel then the puller will thread into the flywheel. i had about 125 psi on my banshee with a +4 degree key and had no probs.

what kind of holder do you use to remove the nut? i would think the engine would turn over.

The best way to get the nut off is with an impact. Another way is to insert a newer penny (aluminum) between the gears to hold it. Please keep the flames low guys. I know that not everyone does it the penny way.

I broke a gear tooth doing that.....and it didn't take much force.... :unsure: put the shee in gear and have someone hold the rear brake pedal.....

You can get a belt type strap tool to hold the flywheel,and then take the nut off with a impact.

Why do you have to hold the throttle open to do a compression test?

HOld the throttle open to help the motor pull air into it easier and get a more accurate test....

If you want a real accurate test,warm the engine up for a few minutes,then do a compression check.You'll be suprised how much more you'll get on the gauge.

 

I get around 125 cold and 140 once its warmed up

Before buying my impact wrench, thats how I got mine off. take the pick-up coil off so there's room for a strap wrench. Then, just a big breaker bar and the strap wrench and some elbow grease to pop it loose. If you don't have or can't afford an impact wrench, those strap wrenches work wonders.

WRONG! just because it reads higher does not mean its accurate. you are suppose to do the test stone cold with the throttle held wide open. this gives an intak echarge to give accurate results in the compression. doing a compression with a warm motor is like milling a head for more compression when the rings are shot. :shootself: but anwyays if you are getting 125 cold with the thottle open(quad off of course) then you are doing ok.
