LIsurfer_ Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 I am looking for some tips on the best way to persuade the swingarm bolt out of its tiny little home. I took the nut off and tried tapping it with a hammer...no movement. its seems a little tight even just turning it with a socket...can it be smacked with a hammer without any damage? thx Quote
MotulMonsta Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 Knock it out with a brass punch or an extension. Quote
Brian G Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 I just did one the other day!!! Chances are you will ruin the bolt. Get a propane torch and heat up the end of it like crazy, ypu can put a punch in the end of it and beat it with a hammer but chances are you will stretch the bolt out and the nut will not go on. so I say just screw it, and just beat the hell out of it with a sledge hammer, my friend had to chop his swing arm in half with a torch just to get his out. the 30 bucks for the bolt is well worth it considering it will take you 2 days just to get it out!!! LIsurfer_ Posted March 26, 2004 Author Report Posted March 26, 2004 I had put the nut back onto the end of it and went to town with the ten pound sledge....no luck the bastard wont move.................I'll try the torch...waht a bitch...... Quote
badass_r6 Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 whacky whacky! ya gotta just beat the sh*t outa them. i couldn't tell ya how many i had to do like that. at my shop, a sledge, an extension, and some anger is all you need! give it hell! Quote
nate1999mxz600 Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 i used a pnuematic air hammer to get mine out, took like 2 seconds and it came right out! if you got one give it a try. bolt and bearings were toasted though Quote
"thenewguy" Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 how much is the swing arm bolt and barings anmd seals and stuff? its not really $30 is it? i might pay 20 at the most Quote
gumby Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 its right around that.. get the pivot works kit its good then take your swingarm and drill and tap a hole for a grease fitting works wonders. and to get it out i lifted the ass end of the bike supported on the from and beat the shit out of the bolt came out pretty quick getting what was left of the bearings out is different that took the blue tipped wrench......good luck Quote
Nighty Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 hey Qumby, Do you happen to have pictures of this: take your swingarm and drill and tap a hole for a grease fitting works wonders whats the best place to locate the grease fitting? Quote
Brian G Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 Heat it with a torch!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND DONT STOP POUNDING IT!!!! IT WILL COME OUT. Quote
NYUK Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 rumor has it it s hollow for strength, and so you can drill it out.i just had a problem with an upper rear shock bolt,it was welded to the inner bushing of the shock.tried to drill it punch it to no avail.i had to cut the friggin shock out with a grinder.what a fiasco. boonman Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 I believe the pivot works kit is like $45 or $50 for the bearings, outer seals, and the inner sleeve. The bolt, I'm not sure of. it will cost you some $$$. This is where preventative maintenance goes a long way. And it goes to show how it saves you money. A grease fitting would be sweet in there... Too get it out, get a bigger hammer. Seriously. A lot of persuasion may be in order.... Quote
Nighty Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 mine slided out real easy. light tapping was all it took. Ill try to get a nice review done of the grease fitting. Pictures and stuff.. I think its going to be kind of hard since the D@mn$d swingarm is round + grease fitting cannot be to long. (the sleeve wont go in if the fitting is to long) i decided the fitting goes on the downside of the swingarm. Quote
rebelbanshee2 Posted March 26, 2004 Report Posted March 26, 2004 maybe blast it with some penatrating oil and try spinning the bole with an impact wrench to loosen it up. deffinately get a grease fitting on there when you get it out Quote
shellbyzfan33 Posted March 27, 2004 Report Posted March 27, 2004 i just did mine and it took about 20 minutes of straight hard pounding with a 5lb sledge and a large bolt with a tappered end beeing held with a pair of vicegrips. just leave the nut on flush with the bolt so u don't ruin it. heat works wonders!!!!
