Hey guys,

I discussed this in the bansheehq webchat aswell.

I received a K&N filter last week with powerlid and precharger.

My old setup was stock airfilter with no airboxlid using 340 mains.

This ran great/good.

The K&N filters came with 340 mains aswell but since i am already using 340 mains i started a search on what needs to go in now.

The K&N manual recommends: (now this is stupid)

Left carb: main jet up 5 steps no change to needle.

right carb: main jet up 8 steps raise the needle one position.

Why this unequal jetting?

i ran the knn filter this weekend with my stock airbox lid on to prevent extreem leanout.

the performance was terrible.

The shee bogged from time to time, if i reved it up and would dump the clutch it would sometimes deliver no power whatsoever.

After the ride i did a WOT test and the plugs didnt show any color.

that would mean lean!

On the banshee hq i see lots of people with k&N filter and pipes running 300 mains.

The banshee jetting faq recommends:

Add K&N air filter:4-6 sizes larger on the mains, adjust airscrews, add one size on pilots if necessary.

what i'd like to try is this setup:

Pilot jet 27.5 (up from 25)

needle 1 position richer

main going to 360.

I heared the pilot jets are made for banshees specific?

so that would mean i cant go to a local mikuni carb dealer and get the pilots?

And whats with that K&N recommended unequel jetting?

Thanks guys!

Jetting the carbs different is bogus. What other mods besides the K+N? I'm no jetting guru but I know the carbs got to be jetted the same. If all you have is a K+n then you won't need that big of main.

other engine mods:

Toomey t5

+4 timing

boyeson reed petals.

and the new k&n filter + powerlid

thats about all i have in engine mods.

altitude is 0 above sea level.

sounds like the directions for jetting the carbs different is for a raptor, as for your jetting i had 320's with a k&n and pipes and it ran good i probably could have used another size larger.

Going to rejet it now.

Thanks for the input so far.

I'll get back to you guys with updates.

How about the pilot jets?

Are those special?

Or will any mikuni pilot fit?

Thanks.

hi nighty, im not sure but i was thinking they would be uneven because of 1 side has a choke????? what does every1 think

The pilots are differant for banshees. You'll have to go to a Yamaha dealer and ask for banshee pilots, because regular Mikuni pilots won't work.Tithead as for the choke being on one side it dosen't matter because of the choke tube that runs between the carbs to balance them.

Hmm crappy i'll have to order the pilots then.

Knowing the stealership it will take ages :P

i cleaned the carbs real good yesterday and took the shee apart.

(need to do some electrical work to)

Since i wont have pilots anytime soon

I'll up the needle 1 position and mains 360 for tonight.

+reassembly and testing and adjusting air screw.

Again more to come.

I hope i'm close with the jetting :D

reassembled the shee and took it for a ride.

its MUCH MUCH better now.

trothle response is better it seems to NEVER rev out and keeps pulling. havent heared it bog yet up in the high rpms

however when comming out of a corner and falling just below the powerband (off the pipe).

It takes some time before it will get ON the pipe again.

(no bogging or anything it just doesnt pull)

Plug chop to come, sattisfied at the moment.. if it holds up saturday while doing some trails i'll be happy.

Any comments about the low(er) power corner exiting?

besides shifting back a gear :)

Thanks Banchetta, I will give it a go.

Howcome a needle can make such a great difference?

according to the jetting faq the needle only controls 1/2 to 3/4 trothle.

And ofcourse while exiting a corner trothle is always pinned :D .

I think the pilots would make this setup complete.

This might help you.

Well put it this way.....you have 3 large ranges of carb calibration....Idle, WOT, and everything in between......If one of those ranges isn't right, then it'll cause hesitation and bog....If the pilots or idle range is running rich or lean, then when you go into another range, it takes a second for the air/ fuel to change over to a different mixture that the motor likes better.....thats where your hesitation comes from....If the pilots are perfect and mains are perfect, and the needles aren't, then again, you'll have a hesitation when coming from 1/4-3/4 to wot.....so you can see that not only mains are important, but everything works together...All 3 ranges must be perfect to get great response...This takes hours, but well worth the hours of great riding after.....

How often are you totally off or totally full throttle??? 20%?? The other 80% is in the needle range, so now you see why the needles make such a huge difference...Next time you ride, think about how far the throttle is being pushed, you'll be amazed how you hardly ever open it up fully.....
