vmaxup Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 ok coil is fixed and the motor is great with the new porting. Ran great at Glamis for two day last weekend. We wer duning and I lost all gears except fo 5, and 6. Made it to Olds then took the sand highway back to camp. I got the gears back at Comp. Must of been from riding the woops on the way back. It was like the shifter was stuck and would not move lower than 5 th Ok so I rode back to camp and decided dont fix it. Just ride it. I went to the drags and beat the thing to no end and had no problems. I run 2 quarts so the clutch rod is bathed in oil from past problems of welding the rod to the ball on another shee. So now what take a look see or keep riding. But why. Is something out of adjustment? with the pin that the shift triangle sits on. Help got 3 weeks and its back to Glamis. Also looking for another coil Eric Quote
SDD Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 You must have took them out while you were busy swapping coils.... Where else could they have gone to? Your the guru you tell us since none of us are smart enough to help you with your problems Quote
bbluebanshee Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 might check to see if your shift shaft is bent. i had a similar problem, i put my shift shaft on a straight edge and found the problem instantly. Quote
boonman Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Could be alot of things. Bent shift fork, worn out shift drum, improperly adjusted shift lever..... process of elimination...... Quote
99screaminshee Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 i had a similar problem a few months ago it started off that my shifter would stay down when id downshift and stay up when id upshift then after a hour or so i lost everything but 6th gear rite as i was pulling into my driveway it too was gone i tore the clutch side case off and there were parts everwhere i found my shift star laying in the bottom with a couple other things a dowel pin screw and a lock washer i took it to the local shop and he said it was a common problem because yamaha doesnt use loctite on these parts and they fall off and reak havoc it only costed my 110 bucks and its guarranteed for as long as i own the bike which will be forever cuz i love my shee Quote
ledofthezep Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Could be your shift forks binding up, had that happen to me before,...take the clutch cover off & move the shifter a bit & if it's just bound up you'll see it & be able to un-wedge it with a little flathead. If that's the case, after you get it un-bound, take your shifter off & put a couple washers on there(I put a rubber washer next to the stator cover to prevent wear) and then put your shifter back on. This will prevent the left-to-right play of the shifter rod that allows it to bind up. Quote
yamaha350 Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 i had a customer that had a similar problem. heres what i found. the part of the shift shaft that turns the shift star got turned sideways in the star. this fix was simple, just pulled it out and put it back. so far it hasnt done it since then. almost 6 months. make sure your shaft doesnt have a lot of play in and out. there is a stop on the clutch cover that helps hold it in place. it could have come off the star enough to not catch it. MotulMonsta Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 you know inside that tranny is a lot of things that can go wrong. First of there is your shift lever shaft if that's bent it could throw the shifts off..then there is the cam inside the tranny where the forks align into and on that cam is what's refered to as a shift star I belive. It has as many pegs as gears (6) and on the end of the shift lever there are the star pin grabbers and also a return spring and an adjuster. If the shift lever is not grabbing the star right it wont shift. also of the forks that ride in the groves of the cam are worn..it will bind and won't shift. There is also a bearing that the cam rides on if that's shot it will throw the shifts off. If it shits fine under power, it your forks..they're worn...you should feel notchy shifting if that's true. If it does not engage right..or pops out of gear..your shifter lever is out of wack. that's a simple prognosis. The cam can last forever..it's steel..the forks are aluminum. Oh on the gear are dogs...of those dogs are worn the gears will stick. That's an EXPENSIVE repair...everything else is relativly easy. My tranny doesn't like to go into third. but it's and old 87 and everything is worn. but it works so until I can find me a new bottom end for cheap..i'm just going to live with it. Quote
