efward Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 OK. I took a day trip out to Glamis this weekend and came home with some new issues. I was on a ride in the big dunes coming downhill in some soft sand. I wasn't really riding a wheelie, but I was on the gas and the front tires were off the ground and it was a tight section. I let off the gas to set the front tires back down so I could steer. The tires were turned slightly when they came down, they just dug deep into the sand and I went up and over the bars and the bike catwheeled afer me. When the bike came to a rest on it's side, I pulled it over and started to reattach my whip. I noticed that the cooler rack was sitting kinda funny. I stepped back and the cooler rack is sitting at a 45 degree angle to the right. I look closer and it looks like the whole rear end of the bike is leaning to the right pretty noticeably. Enough so that the seat leans noticeably to one side. The bike looks like it twisted the frame. My question now is: What options do I have to fix this? I haven't had to deal with frame issues before. Has anyone here straightened thier rear frame before? How can I do it? The only advice I got from my group was to crash it on the other side.... thanks Quote
Holyman Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 File a claim w/ your insurance and get paid Quote
2004LEBanshee Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 yup but make sure that you have insurance for at least three months or you'll probably get dropped. Quote
2001SSTBanshee Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 or get a new frame and get to work Quote
wheeleymaster99 Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 yeah theres some cheap fraims goin on ebay every onece and a wile Quote
locogato11283 Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 insurance would be my best suggestion. but make sure there is enough shit to call it totalled tho. it has to be within 80% of the value. say its worth 5000, it has to come to 4000 in parts and labor. i did that to mine and they let me buy it back for 500 bucks. so i waled away with like 2300 and my 4 wheeler. all i had to do was bend one of the grab bar brackets back up. im still riding it today. a frame shop can straighten it would be your second option. i had a blaster frame done one time, it ran about 300 bucks. but i still dont think itll ever be the same if its bent reeallly bad. i would go with the insurance deal provided its a 2001 or 2002. a 2003 might be worth too much and older than 01 prolly wouldnt be worth claiming. raxen Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 I've got some old frames laying around my yard and storage building. Do you need one with a title or just a bill of sale? Quote
Banchetta Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 I have a '89 frame all powdercoated and looks like new, or you could get a long solid steel rod or shaft and bend it back...what could you possibly hurt??? Quote
efward Posted January 19, 2004 Author Report Posted January 19, 2004 Shit. Not the answer I was looking for. They are appreicated none the less. It isn't insured so that one's out. Here are some pics anyway: Quote
ledofthezep Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 Nice Ride! Looks like it's just the subframe bent from the pics...you can probably thank that big ass AC grab bar for a lot of the bending. I'd say get you a cheater bar & a BFH and get it straitened out. Then maybe gusset the frame a bit to make her a little stronger in the arse, & if you're worried about some paint chips...repaint or powdercoat the frame. Just MHO... Quote
DUNEDEMON Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 efward, same thing hapened to my riding buddy. Have you removed the rear plastic etc.. to have a look at the extent of the damage? From your pictures looks to be contained in the rear sub-frame area, if so this is a fairly easy fix. You can use some heat and re-align the sub-frame or have the subframe replaced with a chromoly piece (will require cutting and welding, paint / powdewcoat) the shop who built my engine does this modification on a regular basis. For what it's worth the shop is located in Yucaipa (about 1 1/2 hours north of san diego) Dunedemon. Quote
Wallrat Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 Save some money on all that frame straightening crap and just pour a can of V-8 in the tank. Quote
