Yamaha21 Posted September 22, 2015 Report Posted September 22, 2015 I had my banshee lock up in what I believe to be 3rd hear while I was riding it. When I tore it down I found the shift shaft was worn out pretty bad so I replaced the shaft, did the FAST upgrade, and now when I have adjusted the eccentric screw correctly I still cannot get the bike to roll through the gears properly. Should I be able to click through all the gears just rolling the quad back and forth? What could be causing this? I'm lost now, I thought I had the problem solved but it seems that now although I got it to shift down to first and everything it now is still having a hard time getting through the gears. Any insight is much appreciated! Thanks. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk Quote
Yamaha21 Posted September 22, 2015 Author Report Posted September 22, 2015 Update: I got it back into first after rolling it back and forth and working it through the gears. Is this normal? As I try to get it through all the gears it will get stuck on the way up through the gears. I'll attach a picture to show what I mean. It's like it's stuck between gears on the tip of the shift star. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk I took the shift shaft off and tried to just run it through the gears by rotating the shift drum and it goes through all the gears just fine until I go to switch from 4th to 5th. It gets stuck on the transition up to 5th and stops on the point of the shift star between the two gears. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk Quote
CycleTech Posted September 22, 2015 Report Posted September 22, 2015 Sounds like you have a problem with the shift drum and or a bad fork. Are you spinning the countershaft while trying to shift? You should get the rear off the ground and spin the rear wheels while trying to shift through the gears so that the gear dogs can fall into place while you are spinning the drum through the gears. If it wont alow you to do so then you will need to get into the tranny and report back with your findings or pictures. Quote
registered user Posted September 22, 2015 Report Posted September 22, 2015 try turning the clutch shaft while shifting it. they usually wont shift through the gears without the shaft spinning Quote
CycleTech Posted September 22, 2015 Report Posted September 22, 2015 Im assuming you have the clutch basket off so you can spin the tranny?? Quote
Yamaha21 Posted September 22, 2015 Author Report Posted September 22, 2015 Im assuming you have the clutch basket off so you can spin the tranny??Yeah I have the clutch basket off, I haven't been spinning the clutch shaft as I shift but I'll try that tomorrow after work when I get a chance to look at it. Even without spinning the clutch shaft I could get it to shift smoothly through 1-4. It just will only go half way between 4-5. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk Quote
trickedcarbine Posted September 22, 2015 Report Posted September 22, 2015 Yep, no way a stock trans will go through all 6 sitting still. Need to definitely be turning the counter shaft or clutch side of the trans. Quote

Thanks for the advice, tomorrow I'll get the rear end up and get it spinning as I try to go through the gears and see if that will allow me to go through all 5 gears smoothly. There's on 5 gears right? Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk Quote

Need to definitely be turning the counter shaft or clutch side of the trans. That is good news! I'm hoping I don't have to split the cases to fix this problem. I'll update tomorrow when I get a chance to look at it again. You answered my previous question too. 6 gears in the tranny. Not 5. I really appreciate the quick responses! I have a raptor 700 and the forum I follow to do work on it is not nearly as lively or helpful as this one. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk Quote

Yamaha21 Posted September 23, 2015 Author Report Posted September 23, 2015 Good news! After putting her up on a stand and turning the wheels I was able to get it through all the gears up and down. Still kinda wants to bind on me but I think it's just because of how slowly it's spinning. Reassembling right now. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk Quote
camatv Posted September 23, 2015 Report Posted September 23, 2015 the stock trans has almost no space for the dogs to engage, so with nothing moving will almost always jam inbetween one or 2 gears going up or down. the shift shaft also has issues and the star / drum has some minor issues.. the problem you came into with the shaft binding is pretty comon you can plan on needing to replace the shaft between 1 and 3 years depending on how much you ride. also replace the eccentric, and spring when you do a shaft. you should have ok shifting after replacing and doing what you did.
