Vincip92 Posted March 22, 2015 Author Report Posted March 22, 2015 Also is the billet impeller worth the extra money for the "35% more cooling" or just get a normal OEM one? Quote
sprinklerman Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 I prefer all OEM parts for a water pump rebuild Quote
bigweav81 Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 Even the impeller? Is there a certain reason why sprinklerman? Quote
sprinklerman Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 Even the impeller? Is there a certain reason why sprinklerman?Yes.The shaft on OEM ones tends to last longer and dosen't groove out. Dosen't wear seals. People try to blame failed plastic OEM impellers for overheating, but in all reality, something else tends to be the problem, and caused the impeller to fail. ( old age, lean condition , bad tuning , etc). The waterpump, gear, and seal are wear items,, just like clutches , etc, they need to be replaced at service intervals. There's guys complaining about the OEM pump failing in a 8+ yr old motor, , I mean come on. Haha. Let's see and aftermarket last that long. I've ran billet impellers before and seen absolutely NO improvement in cooling. But my junk is jetted right and tuned right. Some people just get caught up in technicalities that make no apriciative difference. 1 Quote
trickedcarbine Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 Because some people are sticklers for OEM for different reasons. I'm a Billit guy after seeing a not so old OEM impeller come apart. None the less, change the impeller, bearing, and seal. It wouldn't hurt to check the clip and pin condition as well as the plastic drive gear. I've never messed with the mega impeller. You need a different pump cover plate to run them. I've also never had a problem with most other billits though. They have all been pretty good. Same goes for the OEM, they just need to be checked to verify condition. Quote
bigweav81 Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 Thats a good point. Didn't know if you had a personal failure with billet or something. Quote
Vincip92 Posted March 22, 2015 Author Report Posted March 22, 2015 The guy who had the banshee before me put a billet in when her rebuilt it and I dont know how but it looks bent, its all chewed up and the cover is warn down where the impeller was rubbing against it. any ideas why this would have happened Quote

registered user Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) theres more than one engine that have used plastic gear and impeller. generally they last along time but theres a chance the chemicals can degrade them over time and cause a failure, probly more so with the impeller. aluminum bits aint a bad way to go but i dont think you have much to worry about even with plastic. sure theres a long shot it may fail right away but i think those chances are slim. there must be a million hondas still going strong with plastic gears and nearly every ktm since the early 80's has used plastic impellers without hardly any trouble. i went with the aluminum parts for my banshee but got other engines in the garage with plastic gear or impeller. havent had any problems with any of em Edited March 22, 2015 by registered user Quote
