TroyBrock Posted April 11, 2014 Report Posted April 11, 2014 Fmf fatties, 64.50mm, stock stroke, k&n pods, V force 4, TORS deleted. 400ft above sea level, mid 60s getting warmer. I'm currently at a 30 pilot and that's all the way in, I still have a tad bit of sputter in 3rd right before I hit the main jets. Are 32.5 Pilots too big for stock carbs? Both plugs look exactly the same. Quote
sheerider11 Posted April 11, 2014 Report Posted April 11, 2014 Needle position? Main? Porting? Are you sure it's not a rich bog over a lean bog? Quote
TroyBrock Posted April 11, 2014 Author Report Posted April 11, 2014 Needle is on 3rd, fmf needle, main is 280, stock porting. Sorry missed that. It's definitely lean bog, it's almost gone as I turned the pilots in. They were out at 2 turns, sputtered bad in 1 and 2nd, went to 1 turn out, still sputtered in 2nd, all the way in sputters in 3rd. uman1030 Posted April 11, 2014 Report Posted April 11, 2014 FMF does recommend a 30 for those pipes with stock reed cages so it very well may take a larger then 30 pilot with the VF4's. Although, your issue sounds like it may be needle related if it happens right before "the main kicks in". Its also very likely you have an air leak that is causing the engine to need more fuel. I would first do a leak down test and verify it really just needs more fuel and there isnt another issue that is causing it. Quote
vulvafan537240 Posted April 11, 2014 Report Posted April 11, 2014 No way a stock port needs 32.5 mains Quote
TroyBrock Posted April 11, 2014 Author Report Posted April 11, 2014 I'm building my leakdown tester tonight, so I'll do that tomorrow and update this. What are some common spots for leaks? Both sides look the same so it'd have to be something that effects both sides. Quote
vulvafan537240 Posted April 11, 2014 Report Posted April 11, 2014 Head gasket, base gasket, reeds, intake gaskets Quote
TroyBrock Posted April 11, 2014 Author Report Posted April 11, 2014 Just rebuilt the top end, all new gaskets. Quote
sleeper06 Posted April 11, 2014 Report Posted April 11, 2014 Put those needles all the way rich and try it Quote
vulvafan537240 Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 Just rebuilt the top end, all new gaskets. Doesn't mean that 1 or more aren't leaking. Also crank seals. Quote
TroyBrock Posted April 12, 2014 Author Report Posted April 12, 2014 Put those needles all the way rich and try it I'm gonna leak down test it and then I'll mess with the jetting more. I'm gonna pick up some 32.5 anyway and a couple size bigger mains. Doesn't mean that 1 or more aren't leaking. Also crank seals. Leakdown test will reveal all to me tomorrow. Thanks for the help everyone. Quote
trickedcarbine Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 I can't imagine needing over a 30 pilot. 1 Quote
TroyBrock Posted April 12, 2014 Author Report Posted April 12, 2014 I mean I'm pretty close to sea level and the humidity is low so maybe it's possible? more air more fuel. I'm going out to test fit my leakdown tester but I won't be able to do it til tomorrow. Quote
thomas h. Posted April 13, 2014 Report Posted April 13, 2014 (edited) If you have the dyno jet needle or alba needle the 32.5 pilots work great. The after market needle I'm referring too is longer and the taper is better. Edited April 13, 2014 by thomas h. Quote
TroyBrock Posted April 14, 2014 Author Report Posted April 14, 2014 I installed the needle that came with an FMF jet kit I bought, wasn't able to finish my leak down tester because I got the wrong size PVC pipe Quote
