Banshee engine in motorcycle help

Hey guys, Im new here but not new to 2 strokes I'm just into bikes instead of quads.

Here's the deal I am taking a banshee engine and putting it in a Yamaha RD400 frame that I have and making it fuel injected. What i'm trying to decide at the moment is how big of a big bore I want to go.

I'm in between a 392 398 or 421. Price doesn't really matter between these options but I'm worried if I go too big the power will be too much for this frame and for a motorcycle platform. I've read a lot and searched around but I'm curious to hear which one of these would have the most usable power for the street. This will not be a highway cruiser or top speed machine. I'd like to run it about 90 max and use it for more back road canyon carving riding.

Also I have the option of running two 28mm throttle bodies or do a 2 into 1 manifold with a 38mm throttle body. I've read a lot of mixed reviews here about the 2 into 1 systems so do you think it would work for what Im planning?

For the fuel injection there is also a change in the system I will use once I go over 400cc since I have to use bigger injectors and a bigger fuel pump etc.

Thanks in advance.

Fuel injection huh ? I think you just became zillas new best friend.

But seriously cool idea, I don't really know what kind of bike you have but a 421 might be kinda over kill, that's just me though I really have no idea, I'm sure someone will post in a few minutes

I guess a proper introduction is needed but I'll make it brief. I've been working on and riding motorcycles for almost 10 years. It isn't my profession but 100% of my free time is spent on working on an building bikes. Most of the time I rebuild old broken bikes just because its easier to make money that way. Nothing on a bike or engine I can't do and if I dont have the tools I have resources (mill, lathe etc.). I prefer older 2 strokes I have a couple of Kawasaki H2's and RD350, RD400 Daytona, Yamah LT2 Suzuki GT380 and a couple others that are projects not to mention 2 Kawasaki H2 drag bikes and and H2 Land speed bike being built.

The bulk of the project is pretty simple. the mounting points on the banshee are different but the motor is similar and with the addition of some new front mounts it fits right in and just a little shimming or milling on the rear hub to get the drive line straight. The rest of the bike will be set up with new lengthened aluminum swingarm aluminum rims etc. Only thing I have to do is mount a radiator and plumb it.

Almost all of the big bore options are bolt and go so thats pretty easy. Just plan on lightening and beefing up the bottom end a bit.

The Fuel injection is a "kit" so all of the hard work is already done for me its just wiring it up, The CDI replaces the stock and is programable and I just got an email back from them and the two 28mm throttle bodies will probably fit the spacing on the engine so I think thats what I'll be going with.

I have read several of the big bore kits are "trail ported" and I want to make sure the power is usable power meaning I dont have to rev it to the moon and the powerband needs to be wide enough I could manage it on the street.

Its a company called Ecotrons. They make FI kits for 2 and 4 stroke. You could probably piece it together on your own if you know what you are doing but the electrical stuff is above my pay grade. I'd rather spend the money to get all the parts and the knowledge to back it up and help tune it. I doubt it will be a simple bolt and go but with some tuning and tweaking it should work. I'd get to adjust spark and fuel via laptop vs pulled carbs and rejetting etc etc.

No, I'm not on custom fighters. I'm on a couple 2 stroke forums and vintage bike forums but I figured to get banshee specific info I should go straight to the source which would be you guys

You mess with vintage dirt bikes or just motorcycles

Wayne- I do both. I like Vintage enduros I have a Honda MT250 and a Yamah TT500. Got out of most of my old dirt only bikes.

Zilla- Yes I'll be adding a battery, making a new wiring harness and I will have to make some electrical changes. I haven't put pen to paper for that idea yet but I'm working on it.

Are you saying they need to be much bigger for the 421 or for any of the sizes i mentioned? If you ran the 35mm would you try and run two or use a 2 into 1 manifold and just run the one?

It may be basic but it seems well thought out and fairly complete. I'm not going to spend $1000 and have to build my own with a megasquirt or something. I can replace components as needed with better ones if needed and still be cheaper than the other options I have found.

Has anyone else around here converted one to FI? I searched and only found one thread and someone was asking about a snowmobile.

So you are setting one up for fuel injection as well? Are you using a certain kit or are you making your own?

Injectors depend on what size engine I build. I need to settle on a size and build the system to suit. A 392 will require a different set up than a 421. Depends on how crazy I want to get. I still need some info on how the power is on those kits to decide which route I want to go. I dont want to put a 421 in it and not have any usable power because it wants to twist the frame or take off out from under me every time I snap the throttle.

What kind of engine are you running? I assume yours will be in a quad.

Lots of good info there. It is going to be a lot of work but I can't wait to start actually working on the figures for my needs and building the system.

I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as I start to build it I just need to settle on a size for the engine first.

If you know where any CZ parts are please let me know.

Seen quite a few RD's with banshees. Most of the bike crowd (RZ/RD guys) has had the Athena stuff pushed at them.... STAY AWAY! I bet if you spoke with Rodger at wicked or Stephan from TSS, they would both be telling you to go with the 421. Those guys spend a lot of time on the RD/RZ forums trying to keep the 2 wheel guys up to speed with what's out there now. The only two options if suggest for that would be a serval or cheetah. The cheetah would be the dominant choice if you chose to have a good builder do it but the serval you can pretty much bolt together your self with out any surprises. The serval will give you tons of usable power, it makes the RZ Motor with the YPVS obsolete. If you run it and decide it signs off a touch early for your taste you can send the cylinder out to be ported to your liking. Just pic someone who rides bikes as well as banshees so they will know and understand exactley what your asking for. As far as pipes, you can get nice pipes for road bikes from Rodger at wicked as he does these type of builds often now. They are also doing a unique injection system called PFI. I think you might benefit from a phone call over to wicked or blast through the RZ forums and see what they're up to.

Wayne- Not a lot of old CZ's out there anymore. Cool bikes though. I actually have had a couple Jawa street bikes a 250 and a 350 californian. I am also building a 1951 Jawa Perak with a newer californian engine .

Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to stay away from the Athena stuff then. I was looking for Wickeds website but its down now. I was reading they were working on something FI over there.

What is it about the cheetah that needs to be done by a builder vs me putting it together? For that matter whats the difference between the two? Do the cases need to be machined to take advantage of the cheetah?
