I took my bike out and was driving along at about 50 and it started to knock and died .. I kicked her over and that was it ... Kicks tarter wouldn't budge.. So do that mean it's the bottom end... If so is it worth it to do it ureself or just a hassle..? Thanks guys .. Now I no why you say they are money pits!

Start tearin it appart...

it could be bottom end or you could have broke a piston skirt from excessive pw clearance. Do you keep an eye on compression and keep a clean airfilter?

If your asking these simple questions you'll be better off just having someone fix it for you. Maybe there's someone near you on here with a clue (not likely) that can fix it. If not bust out a few pennies and get it done

Even when it's toast...?

If you are doing a COMPLETE tear-down and rebuild, i wouldn't fool with a leak down test before teardown.  If you are doing a top-end or bottom end only after a melt down, then yea.
