buy a temp gauge, or unhook the over flow line from the rad and when you feel your leg burning from antifreeze hitting it, it's too hot.

They work great for a while....

 

I have since removed my non-functioning gauges and now run simple mechanical temp gauge. Cheap, reliable, and a much safer/sooner indication of overheating than a blown engine.
