SuperMex Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 (edited) Just bought a brand new Hinson spring loaded straight cuts and this damn primary drive gear key will not go in. Has anyone ever sanded theirs down to get it to go in? Cause I am out of ideas! Old one fits fine and I don't want to break out my BFH yet to get this in. Any ideas? Dicklez Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 I didn't have that problem with my hinson however from a mechanical stand point, sanding the key is ok. I just wouldn't want any slop in the keyway. IMO. Good luck. Quote
jlsparky7 Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 Double check that everything is lined up and then sand it... I put a dab of RTV on the key before the install too so itll seal a little better. Quote
SuperMex Posted October 20, 2011 Author Report Posted October 20, 2011 I have checked it more time than I can count it is lined up perfect. The key way is just a lil bit smaller than the stocker. When I first tried driving it in it it left a lil groove in the front where it was catching on the roof of the key way. I know that any slop is bad so I am going to take a liil bit off at a time and try it that way. Quote
camatv Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 call hinson and bitch at them.. at the price they sell that setup for it should fit very nicely mine went on with no issues. Quote
SuperMex Posted October 20, 2011 Author Report Posted October 20, 2011 Cam, it was just a cunt hair off. I just layed my file down flat on the bench and ran the key across it a lol at a time checking the fit as I went. If it wasn't for the cold beer and good music in my garage I think I would have had to hurt someone. I would get more aggravated calling them than just doing it myself. Quote
n2otoofast4u Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 I've had the same issue with theirs and other gear sets. You did exactly what I did. Just make sure you put a dab of sealer on the key. Quote
SuperMex Posted October 21, 2011 Author Report Posted October 21, 2011 Yeah, I put some sealer on it too Quote
BigRed350x Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Good to hear you got it on. Mine was the same way. I just laid down some 200 grit sand paper and ran the key across it a little bit at a time until it fit good. I would rather have it too tight than too loose. Quote

SuperMex Posted October 21, 2011 Author Report Posted October 21, 2011 Hahahaha if it ain't tight, it ain't right. Yeah mine was tight enough that I had to drive it in. Thats how I like it! Quote
Tedder Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 It's not at all uncommon to dress the key to fit. As stated ealier. Lay a file on the bench and work down one surface only. Also, No need to have it so tight that it needs pounded in. Quote
