CFH87 Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Checked grounds on the coil and cdi. Changed coils but haven't gotten to try a different cdi... What else could it be? It fired and ran for 3 seconds and died, Hooked a timing light to it and it fires 1 time out of 10 kicks maby... Quote
jlsparky7 Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Plugs, flywheel key, stator, kill switch, short. Quote
CFH87 Posted September 24, 2011 Author Report Posted September 24, 2011 Could it be the cdi causing this? Plug's are brand new and I've checked the stator tested fine... It still sparks just not as often. Quote
jlsparky7 Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Im pretty sure when the CDI goes bad it just craps out all together. Not intermittently like you describe... Quote
apeik Posted September 25, 2011 Report Posted September 25, 2011 I actually had a cdi that did somewhat the same thing, usually it would start right off the truck, turn it off after warmup and it wouldnt start, and at night it didnt want to start. checked the spark and it was really random(few sparks then nothing). Replaced the cdi and it's been bulletproof sparkwise since. if you can swap a cdi with someone i would check it out, just dont rule out the stator. Quote
CFH87 Posted September 25, 2011 Author Report Posted September 25, 2011 Gotta find an 87/89 cdi in Michigan... Mite have to just buy one. Quote

CFH87 Posted September 29, 2011 Author Report Posted September 29, 2011 Was the coil fired up 2nd kick with the juice... Quote
wfobasheeboy Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Well after many weekends riding the bike. It would run good for 1HR or 2. Then it would start running like sh@*. Tested the coil found Primary side shorted. Change the coil with a new one and the wires. Headed back out to the sand bike ran good for 20 min then would start to run bad or not run at all let sit for a 1hr. Then she would run find and then do it all again. So I replace the CDI box. I took it out this last weekend at Pismo the bike ran great all weekend. I did not open my tool box all weekend it was very nice. So I think have all the bugs worked out now. WFO Quote
