midlifecrisis Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 OK, so Ive bought a dual pingel off egay, and was talking about it on another thread, thats what brought up the fact that my fuel consumption was high. I havent installed the pingel yet, as I wanted to correct my issue before I do. I had gone for a ride with some buds, and ran out of gas after two hours. I was trail riding, and not that hard. I dont have a leak, or Id see fuel on the floor under the bike. I was stunned when I ran out, as I thought it should have used only half that. Any ideas? These are stock carbs, check my mods. Quote
bigblockbanshee Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Maybe one of them siphoned some fuel when you were away from it? Quote
crustydemon Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 That doesnt seem that out of line compared to the one that I have stock carbs on. I could go about 2 1/2 hours with 290 mains not riding too hard. Quote
12 0 Clock P I M P Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 when i ran 300 mains at 500 above sea level....65.5mm stock head...pt mids it burned through fuel...welcome to the world of twin carbs.... Quote
AKheathen Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 first, it's winter...the thing naturally wants to suck more fuel. make sure your filter is clean, and not over-oiled, same with making sure the outterware isn't restricting. not riding hard, mabey even rich on the needle, or airscrew. tune that hing when it gets hot, so there is no sputter. 2hours really isn't that bad this time of year, especially for your build. lms1977 Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 I could be wrong but I thought you said ithe other post you ran out of fuel 2 times in 2 hours. Quote
midlifecrisis Posted December 6, 2010 Author Report Posted December 6, 2010 I could be wrong but I thought you said ithe other post you ran out of fuel 2 times in 2 hours. Ran out after 2 hours, then added a bit of fuel to get me home and ran out again, but thanks for bringing up the mistake. Alright then, I have jetted to a bit rich, so I might bring it down a size. Now I need a bit more riding to see if it holds steady on the consumption. So winter will cause it to burn more fuel eh? huh! Quote

So winter will cause it to burn more fuel eh? huh! cold air is more dense, meaning more is going through the engine, in turn, needing more fuel. also, freezing air is significantly dryer, which leaves a lack of moisture dilution of the air, again, needing more fuel in the air.... Jereme6655 Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 AK is totally right......the colder the temp is means that there are more air molcules in the same area. which being that much more dense equates to more air going through the motor in the same amount of cylinder strokes.....this is why you have to raise your main jets higher in the winter to compensate it from running lean. same thing goes for performance cars.....ever wonder why drag car guys love the cold weather?....denser air means they can put more fuel in and lay more power down... wesw Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 are the slides in correctly and not turned around basically running on chock. Quote
Darthwall Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 2 hours isn't terrible when I first got mine I could go 4 hours or so now I can go 2 miles down the road and there is a half tank gone Quote
CraigP Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 The first mod I ever put on my banshee was a 5.5 galloon gas tank. I got the Clarke tank but wish i spent the extra money for the IMS tank. I was tired of having to go refill gas in the middle of trail riding. Oversized gas tank is probably the best investment I have made. 1 Quote
midlifecrisis Posted December 19, 2010 Author Report Posted December 19, 2010 No offence dude, but the Clarke tank that was on my bike when I bought it, was the first thing I removed and sold. I liked the idea of the desert tank, but hated the look of it. I have a set of 34mm PJs on the way, so we'll see how they compare? If theyre better on fuel than the stockers, then Ill be glad to see the back of them. Quote
gotta_goatsfast Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 I invested in a 5.5 gallon IMS tank too. I still stop half way through the day to fill up. lol, and I'm working on a new motor (joining the serval crowd) with 35mm carbs... looks like it'll be 3 times a day next year. lol, thats the nature of the beast. The banshees are a thirsty machine. I do notice that when I ride trails that are not challenging or fast paced, I consume just as much fuel. Probably because most of the fuel is unburnt blowing right through the cylinder and into the pipe when I'm below the powerband cruising, where as fast paced trails and races I'm in the powerband effectively burning most-to-all of the fuel turning it into mechanical energy instead of out the ehxaust. Bad news is that installing those PJs will most likely result in equal or worse fuel consumption. Unless ofcourse the bike is running rich now, and you jet the PJs spot on... that could result in an increase. Quote
