I just bought a 1999 Banshee 350 last night for $600 . It runs , BUT it won't idle at anything less than 10,000 RPM (or somewhere around there) It has all brand new gaskets, FMF Fatty pipes (on stock jets no silencers) new chain and sprockets and a racing clutch. I 've checked it twice for leaks around the gaskets and found nothing, there is no vaccuum leaks in the carbs , there is a small leak around where the shifter goes into the transmission and thats about it. Is there something electrical on those carbs and how does that work?(the guy i bought it off of was talking some jive about elctrical shit on the carbs...I don't know anything....)The carbs are also freshley cleaned. Any help here would be hot and greatly appreciated! All I wanna do is ride man....

if it has fmf pipes and stock jets then i would say that is your problem....

Thanks man , I have 260 jets maybe i'll throw those in there and try it , I just thought it would idle and run like shit , not start on the first kick and then rev to near redline with the choke on.

Pull the air cleaners/boots and look to see if the carb slides are comeing down all the way, if not you have a problem with carbs , cable , or throttle. Btw , it only sounds like 10k . Welcome to BHQ !!

the elcectrical boxes ontop of your carbs are TORS units (throttle over ride system) its meant to keep your bike from runnin away when it sees that the carbs are opened up but the thumb throttle is still at idle. The reason your bike is screaming up in the RPM's is because it sounds like you have a large air leak. When you get an air leak on a 2-stroke it leans the fuel/air ration out and will make the motor "free-rev" or rev up completely on its own.

 

The best way to find your leak and make sure you have no more is to look at one of the sticky threads up on the forum.....there's one on how to do a leak-down test. you want your motor to hold 6psi of air for 6 minutes.....if it passes that then your golden. If it doesn't (which i believe yours wont by the way you've described it) the air will continue to leak out which will give you the ability to spray soapy water on all seals and find the leaks.

jesus, dont tell him that..."free rev" which is slang ive never heard or "deiseling" is from a lean condition, but if it was that lean it wouldnt even start, what happens is once your engine is started, if it runs lean and hot enough, it will become so hot it doesnt need a spark to ignite the mixture, the heat and compression alone will make it fire, if this happens, even after running out of fuel it will continue to run on air, we did it on purpose in school and ive seen it happen to a blaster on a friend, we pushed it outside, ripped the tank off, ripped the carb off, plug wire, it finally slowed down when i got the balls to grab a wrech and spin the plug out, i was so scared the piston was coming thru the culinder, but as soon as i released the compression it shut right off, first of all, it takes a while for one to do this, you dont just cold start it and it revs to the moon, clearly the slides are stuck open from a bad cable, bent needle, dirt, etc or someone turned the idle way to high...unless you have a hole in your cases or a bad headgasket i dont see it revving tio the moon the second you start it, it would take some time to lean out and do that, an air leak would case more of an irratic slow idle than a screaming like your talking about

 

wat you need to do is look in the rear of your carbs and make sure your slides are closing all the way check this video out, it will show you how to check that...

 

 

after that get some silencers and jet it correctly...

 

stick to 4 pokes 450r...hehe

Or you could've just put it in gear and let the clutch out and held the brakes. It's hard to think logically when something like that is going on though.
