benb5241 Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 Ok guys, like the title says, for some reason my powerband is disappearing. It will go out after I've ridden it for about a minute then it is just pure bog and smokes a lot where it was. Idles great but after idle, about where the powerband kicks in, there is nothing. It runs through where the powerband was but smokes a lot and there isn't any power and I have to let the Banshee sit for about a day for it to come back, and it only does so for about a minute. I just put this together and it ran great through the break in period, but after I broke it in and was riding regularly the powerband quit pretty much when I was out riding. I had to idle it back home. Things I have done are: played with the jetting, cleaned the carb, cleaned the air filter, changed spark plugs, cleaned the carb again, took my exhaust out, since it had been sitting in a barn for about a year and determined nothing had built a nest in it, I'm out of ideas on what this can be guys. It's a 96 so it doesn't have a parking break and the tors is disconnected. Quote

Change your spark plug caps.Unscrew the factory ones of the ends of the plug wires and install new NGKs.They have resistors inside of them that blow and cause you to lose your spark when the power band kicks in.Your bike will idle and run with blown resistors but wont run properly under a load. pweezy42 Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 mine was the same way i had my carb slides in the wrong carbs(thanks again to infamous and wacko) try that Quote
So Cal Suspension Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 This questions has been asked a million times. The answer is always the same. You need new power-bands. Quote
pweezy42 Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 lol that is fucking great :jesterlaugh: Quote
benb5241 Posted June 1, 2010 Author Report Posted June 1, 2010 Haha, yeah, I double checked, the powerbands are in the right way and I only have a single carb so no screwing up which way the slides go in. Right now I'm leaning towards the coil just by process of elimination and I just tested it and it failed the ohms test between the secondary circuits as said in the Clymer manual. Quote

Are you sure it didn't fail because of the resistors in the boots? VERY common problem, coils don't fail that often.I replace boots about once a year.Boots cost about $5 a piece.Take off the boots off the wires and check them by themselves.5 k ohms Quote

If it doesn't I'll be back on again and if anyone has any other ideas to try in the mean time I'm open to them. Quote
benb5241 Posted June 5, 2010 Author Report Posted June 5, 2010 (edited) Ok guys replaced the coil still doing it. No powerband. A little background is it just happened out of the blue and now there is no powerband 90% of the time. The plugs look oil covered, but the insulator is perfect brown color, just has a coating of oil over it. I checked my float level, cleaned carb again, swapped out plugs, new coil and wires, ohm tested stator and made sure my pickup gap was good. Could it maybe be a ground? Where are the grounds at on these? Im at a loss other than that and cdi, and I dont want to spend $100 on a CDI if its not that. Edited June 5, 2010 by benb5241 Quote

Check your reeds for shits and giggles...but the frame must be bare metal for the coil mounts. As well as the frame mounts for the motor. I would say reeds though as mine did that. If not check your tranny fluid level. Quote
benb5241 Posted June 5, 2010 Author Report Posted June 5, 2010 O sorry I forgot to say but I also checked the reeds and they were in tip top shape. Ill have to make sure my mounts for my coil are good and my engine mounts are too. What would checking the tranny fluid level be for? Quote
camatv Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 is it overheating? is all tha smoke burning antifreeze? if the left side crank seal (or worse something exploded and took out the cases) is bad it will suck the trans fluid in and burn it usually they will still kinda run but after the oil is gone buy by motor Quote
Larry's Shee Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 Using the correct puller, remove flywheel.Inspect for loose magnets, clean inside. Clean any rust off poles on stator and "lugs" on outside of flywheel . Inspect stator closely for any bad insulation. Inspect ALL conections and wireing. Check screws for timing plate. Check all grounds. Quote
