I have 2 over rides waiting to go into customer's bikes' but i'm weery about putting em in due to all the horror stories i've been hearing lately. if anyone has any imput please chime in. people want their bikes back n i need em outta here. locogato11283 Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 i was witness to a WCR tranny grenading itself. broke a tooth off 1st gear i think it was. what WCR is saying is that they used to use a spring where they now use a spacer. apparently thats been the cause of numerous trannys being returned this year. upon further investigation, i believe that WCR forgot to install a clip on the rear transmission shaft right behind the idler gear. this allowed the gear to slide all the way against the cases which caused the actual failure. personally, i have not been impressed with what ive heard about their "bulletproof" transmissions. i have had a 2-4 duneable for years now and never had an issue. i rarely use the clutch when downshifting and i had one shift fork after 4 years of use that had some wear on it. shanYE west Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 goin on my 4th season with a WCR trans.. Not one issue.. I wouldn't hesitate to use one.. My next trans will be a WCR also. Quote
sleeper06 Posted March 21, 2010 Author Report Posted March 21, 2010 My issues are not with the old peices I have three dunables with springs on the forks for about two years with no problem whatsoever,Its the new extremes that I have the issue with.Last night I got crazy and laid out a new overide a stocker and an old one all in cases mocked up with drums.Im interested in seeing where they went wrong. So I got it all figured out last night. The spring that hold 1st and 4th gear slider on the tranny shaft is causing binding on the case and also causing the gear to sit in limbo more so than usual and tag other gears .This was all spinning at loww RPM on a variak set-up.You should see how bad the cases are marked up and I can only imagine what it would sopund like at idle let alone screaming.Well now I have $900 worth of trannies for paper weights at the shop LOL Quote
locogato11283 Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 so which gear is actually rubbing the case? is it the one directly behind the idler gear? im pretty sure it was 1st gear when i looked at my clymers. Quote
sleeper06 Posted March 21, 2010 Author Report Posted March 21, 2010 Directly behind idler gear, which is 1st wheel gear.Plus the gear is not inguaged fully due to the spring fighting it.The old way with the spring on the forks had no restriction of gear inguagement at all and no binding. What sucks is they put the word out they were bullet proof.I bought them off a builder and now what,im hoping to take the springs off the shaft and put them back on the forks to correct the problem.I just think its bullshit to have to redesign someone elses shit that wasnt cheep. On a good note I now have a good Idea on cutting my own tranny design.Im going to cut it on my bridgeport today and Quote
locogato11283 Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 yep, same issue spurdy's bike had. 1st gear was rubbing the case. there was no clip on his transmission to keep 1st gear away from the case. it looked to me that the springs they had on the gear shaft were forcing everything towards the clutch. wacko2000 Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 So it seems to be something stupid like a missing clip or are these extremes not "BULLETPROOF" One of the overrides that sleeper has sitting there is mine, and I would really like to get these shit figured out or go with a stock modded tranny???? Quote
locogato11283 Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 its hard to say. WCR thinks its one thing, but i can say that i feel pretty confident that the clip not being there has something to do with it. if your trannys dont have the clip, i would make sure it gets put in before you run it. thats what keeps 1st gear from rubbing on the case. BigRed350x Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Springs on the gear shaft is a little sketchy to me. The shaft and gears are designed with certain clearances and the drum was designed with assumed side to side movement clearances on the gears. Throw a spring on the gear shaft and all that goes out the window. I've always used springs on the shift fork shafts on the transmissions I build, but I don't think I'd even try and throw springs on the gear shafts. Quote
captainhowdie Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Does anyone have an extreme dunable that works? I got my extreme dunable back from greg @wcr feb 5th, but he "forgot" to send one of my shift forks back with the trans. I still to this day have not gotten the fork. Every time i call they say it has been shipped. Four different times it must have gotten "lost" in the mail. They always have an excuse. If i put this extreme dunable in and it gernades im gonna be pissed. Not only have i been dicked around time after time about my fork but now i dont even know if the fucking thing is going to work. Hey loco.. do you have a pic of the clip thats surposed to retain first gear? It looks to me like mine has a clip, but i want to make sure thats the clip your talking about. Quote
mailman Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 It is hard to speak for someone else but I am pretty sure that Greg wants to hear from you guys directly with your broken or not broken Extreme transmissions. I bought one a few months ago and had the trans break some teeth off of 3rd gear when I downshifted without the clutch. The big issue with that trans was the input shaft needed a spring instead of a collar. It is a design flaw that Greg will achknowledge. He has been working on getting this trans to be bulletproof. He actually has my extreme trans in his kids bike right now and they are testing it and trying to get it to fail. They have had it out once and beat it up but could not get it to fail. Greg decided to put springs on the shift forks also, just like the old dunable, to help insure the "bulletproof" promise. He is still testing it this way with the spring on the input shaft and the springs on the forks and wants to make it right. My stories could fill pages but I don't see the point in that. Greg is trying to do the right thing. I believe he sold around 50 extreme trannies before I got mine. That means that there are 50 failures waiting to happen. Well, less than that, since some others have already failed. I would not run this trans until he puts the spring on the input shaft. I only got about 10 minutes on my trans before it blew up. I don't know anything about the clip issue but I know he is working on a double clip design is that helps. I obviously wouldn't run the trans if a clip was missing. It can be a little tough to get through but call WCR, and let them know what you have and get Greg's input on what you should do. I feel your pain. It can get pretty frustrating. I will finally get to ride again this coming weekend at Glamis. My bike has been down for quite some time. Greg actually sent me an old style dunable to use until the extreme trans get figured out. I hope this helps, Mailman Quote
BigRed350x Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Sounds like he's standing behind the bulletproof claims. I'd just get a hold a him and sort out any issues with the extreme transmissions before you put one in. The dude sent out a normal duneable in exchange for a broken extreme. That's a good move on his part. I'd just contact him and send yours back if you have issues or doubts about running it. - Jared Quote

wacko2000 Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 The way my luck is going with Tranny's There is NO WAY that extreme is going in my motor until some serious shit gets worked out. Quote
