Just tore my 421 apart after its first season due to i had some coolant leaking into motor, when i ordered my cubs they were "supposed" to be ported but after having a friend that look at em the was very experianced in cub motors, he told me they never were touched, he told me i could do some cleaning up on em to the transfers and intakes to help everything flow a lil better and ive ported/cleaned stock cylinders before that helped but never cubs, question is.. is it ok to do this as long i dont hit the plating on the sleeves? just dont want to have to get em re nikasil'd, or would you guys recomend just leaving them alone?

are you sure they havent been touched? my 10mm cub cylinders dont look like theyve been touched either, but i know they have. maybe you guys just dont know what youre looking at.

well i cant say i know what im looking at bein this is my first set of cubs, but the guy i had look at em worked for a very reputable company building their motors for a few years while he was goin to MMI, so if he says they hadnt been touched i believe him.

If they don't look like they are ported they could have been ported before plating. Some builders get cubs unplated , port them and then have them plated. There's very little difference in looks from a non ported cyl. You are talking about a 1/2 a mm here a slightly changed angle there.

Porting and cleaned up are two different things.

I can tell you I have an HJR port job, my good buddy has a K&T on his 10 mil cub.

If I didn't know what a stock cub port job looked like, I'd swear his K&T wasn't ported.

Cleaning it up is just removing some casting flaws...but porting is changing the size, location and/or shape of the holes in the cylinder.

Since your friend went to MMI, tell him to put the motor on a degree wheel and give us the durations and blow down numbers.

Cubs dont' need drastic porting...they're pretty damn good out of the box.

I wish I could say yes...but I'm going to run my trusty old 10 mil cub again this year.

We simply have a ton of 10 mil cubs around here with the guys I race with.

NO real reason to go bigger. I just gotta lose the lbs....

However....

My next motor I've been saying will be a 10 mm DM.

Glad Kev's got his hands on one...can't wait to see how it turns out.
