So Id like to just confirm, when measuring the carb size, are you to take the top off the carb and measure the opening on top, or is the size determined by another measurement? As far as I know the mikuni 26mm's are stock, correct? Why do so many of you guys swear by upgrading to keihin's?

No, it's measured on the throat of the carb on the intake side.

26mm Mik's are stock. People up grade to larger carbs to let more air in, and get a better carb design . I happen to like Mikuni's my self, others like Keihin carbs.

The stock carbs are good until you start doing more motor work such as porting, stroking, larger bore where you need more air in.

Thanks for the civilized responses, I felt kinda stupid asking it, but I thought it was a valid question, I was just hoping that "Building my First" didnt read it, I didnt need to be called a retard. So whats a good set of used stock carbs worth?

You have a very legitimate question. Draining fuel, come on now that's elementary.

Broncobob is correct, but stock carbs will produce 60-70 HP. They are not ideal for high end builds where high rpm throttle response is a must. Prices fluctuate but $75 dollars is fair for a stock set with tors delete caps.

Carbs also depend on what kinda of riding you do.... If your bike just has the basic bolt ons, then putting bigger carbs on,arent going to help it at all.... Bigger carbs will kill your bottom end and low end response....... If your bike is mostly stock, and you mostly trail ride and rode ride, then you would be best to stick with the stock carbs... Now, if you have all the bolt ons, and some port work, and you dune ride, hill climb or do some sort of hi end, hi rpm racing, then you would see some gains going to a 28, 33, even 35mm carb, depending how radical your banshee is........
