DuneHoon Posted February 18, 2010 Report Posted February 18, 2010 I searched and there is very limited info on doing this. I would pay for a rebuild but I just can't understand why it costs so much. I looked and found a few places in magazines that do suspensions and they all say around 100 bucks for a rebuild. So I figured it would be around 150 with parts and maybe another 100 for a spring. Well, that 100 bucks became 600 bucks in seconds after sending a shock to Factory Connection for a rebuild recently. They socked me for anodising the shock body, a used replacement shock shaft, no revalving, not even a new spring that I needed, that would be several hundred more dollars if I wanted that. I'm not Bob Hannah or some factory rich kid, I just need a shock that isn't leaking oil. If I send this blown Banshee shock to someone, I don't want to spend more than around 150 bucks for the rebuild. I also just bought a new 6.3 Eibach spring for it that I want put on it. Please send me a link on how to rebuild it myself, or if you know a place that won't try to sell me expensive stuff I don't want. Quote
SkinInd_Banshee Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 let the gas out of the resivour then push down on the resivour, remove circlip *new*, take out bladder, pour out fluid, push down on shock valve body, remove clip*new*, put valves in oil, replace the oil seals on shaft, repeat in reverse order, fill the shock body with new oil at a 45* angle If bled properly when assembled, put 100psi to test, push down and shock should fully extend. Or just send to a shop and just pay for oil seal replacement. Have a great day Quote
-Herbie- Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 There was an article in dirt wheels in 09 all about how to do it yourself shock rebuild. Check it out. Also you may try giving this place a call. A lot of local guys have this place do their re-builds. Right now he's charging $75 for the rear or $150 for all 3 for re-build. -Herbie- Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Just found it was November 09 issue of DW but with the tools you need you'd be better off sending it to Greg's unless you plan to do more of them than just yours. Quote
bbcmudtruck Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 These guys can get you rebuilt for less than $150, especially since you have your new spring already. http://www.gtthunder.com/ Quote
locogato11283 Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 i would absolutely not put any money into a stock banshee shock. find a good used elka, ohlin, axis or works. you can put just as much money into a stock shock as what it would cost you to buy a good aftermarket one. watch ebay and the forums. the deals are out there, you just gotta find them. GrMeyer Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 http://borynack.com/XR650R/xr650r_shock.htm look at that site on the basic shock rebuild. But you need to remember that you will need a new seal head. The stock seal head is not a fun one to get out. You will have to drill the old one out so you can get to the c clips that hold it in. There is a page on a guy that did the rear shock rebuild with a shock tech gold package. He also shows what im talking about on having to drill out the old seal head. You will also need a nitrogen needle. I have been having a hard time finding the piston wear band. But you can get a new seal head from ATV Parts Unlimited for $15 plus shipping. Quote
