New (to me) Banshee

Hi guys, new member/owner of a 89-90 banshee.

So far i've had quite a bit of fun on this thing spent last weekend riding and playing in the mud.. Anyways i've got some questions / comments after playing around with it and was hoping someone here would be inclined to share some insight or advice!

See picture(s) for hopefully clarification on anything I refer to.

1) Tires - the tires that are on this bike don't do well in snow/ice at all.. Spin spin spin, where as my sisters 300ex goes pretty good with its stock tires.. Im pretty sure it's just the tires. Anyways we don't get a ton of snow here in central NC but I would like a tire that is good for trail riding and crossing streams/mud holes.

2) Carbs to Air Box.. There was a gap between where the carbs stop and the air box starts, which I assume there should be something here to make the transition.. For riding purposes since it was muddy I fashioned this out of some rubber material.. There also is no air cleaner inside the box under the seat recommendations on a good one would be appreciated.

3) Plastics - the plastics are white with the frame of the bike red, I think i've decided to paint these as they're not the best looking if you used any specific plastic primers / paints with good success please advise... For no more than I paid for this bike I don't see spending as much to on plastics to replace them.

4) Lighting - I was sad to learn that this being a two stroke doesn't have quite the electrical system some other bikes would have, thus i've looked at the forums and seen people adding a rectifier / battery for dedicated 12 volt accessories. Where did you mount your battery? Would you recommend just going with a battery and charging it if you ride in the dark often?

5) Headers... My headers are attached/suspended with what appears to be a small length of coat hangar wire.. I'm quite sure this isn't a standard yamaha part and probably was held in place via a spring if anyone could provide me with the proper photos of how this is supposed to be attached it would be a big help.. (Note: i've downloaded the electronic manual hopefully it will shed some light here)

6) Idle... It just doesn't idle well, before I go adjusting crap on the carbs are there any pitfalls to be aware of? should I wait until I get a proper air-cleaner to start dicking around with the idle ?

The bike has some other small issues namely bolts missing where the plastics attach to the frame @ the tank, and a missing gear clamp / where the header attaches to the exhaust pipe but those are easily fixed it's also missing the plastic the covers the radiator, which should be here today hopefully.. All in all the shee starts easily and runs great gives me a nice kick in the butt when I crank the throttle wide open through all the gears. :)

Arrow #1 -- What is this cover called? It appears to cover the water pump.... I haven't really found one in a couple searches online because I didn't know what it's proper name was...

Arrow #2 -- This is the area where the gap between the carb & air box is... Is there a part that connects these two items? If so what's it called?

Arrow #3 -- Exhaust hangar/spring etc.. The exhaust here is secured using coat hangar wire... What is SUPPOSED to be there?

Arrow #4 -- Tires.. Not particuarlly aggressive I drift and slide through corners riding trails the back tires break loose frequently and start spinning.

damn man, the thing needs alot of work indeed. Seems like the guy that owned it before you decided to do some redneck inventions rather than spending some money to fix it right. If i were you id sell it. Some other guys here will disagree, but i think your better off selling it

Perhaps..... I paid $400 for it fixed a loose wire at the coil and it runs runs runs! I don't mind putting some time/money into it really as I don't have a ton invested right now.

#1 That is your water pump cover if you don't have one I have will that I'll get off of

#2 There should be a rubber boot with 2 clamps on it. I dont have any extra but I'm sure some one on here prolly does.

#3 Should be an exhaust hanger there you can get a billet piece for about $40 or so, Or someone on here prolly also has a couple extra stockers

#4 Tires look to be razrs or holeshots but they look to be roasted If they where new they would hook fine. I run Holeshot HDs I think that they are pretty kick ass

Also If I were you I wouldn't be running that thing through that type of shit until I replaced those boots and put an air cleaner on there you are only asking for trouble by doing so. Just take your time and go through the whole bike and you'll be OK. And by the way welcome to the HQ:cheers: And if you have any other questions dont be afraid to ask some one will hook you up. Oh yea you need to get yourself a K&N filter, an outerwears cover and maybe an adapter plate unless there's one already in your airbox post up some more pics.

time for new tires. get some razr's or holeshots and run about 3-4 psi in them I've also heard good reviews about kenda knarly's.

the exhaust part there is an exhaust hanger that comes from the frame and is adjustable to fit different pipes they are in-expensive for stock ones.

best carb set up if you are gonna run threw mud and water like that is the k&n pro flow kit which turns your airbox into a setup that holds 1 filter and runs 2 tubes from the box to the carbs.

also if you got an extra couple hundred bucks buy you a set of used pipes: pro circuits, fmfs, t5's are all great pipes and will really get your tires spinnin.

Okay guys more pictures here. I want to apologize for the images you're about to see here as they're horrific but for those of you whom don't have a weak stomach here you go...

This is a top down view looking into the air-box with the seat removed.... There is no lid for this box and the clips that are there indicate that there should in fact be one.

As for spacers and plates and such so let me know haha! I apologize for the dirt and nastyness but i do like to ride (:

Now for the doozy...

20452_1235931297095_1193591421_30729941_1971265_n.jpg

I so didn't want to post this picture lol but here goes... This is the side view of the right hand carb... The zip ties are securing a thin bit of rubber wrapped around the throat of the carb going to the air-box.. I know this does no good without a proper air cleaner but the idea was to keep water out of the carbs while I was riding. Which it did despite looking like complete garbage. Theres also what appears to be a port where a hose should possibly be connected right near the center of the carb to the left of the large phillips head screw.

NOTE* one other thing i've noticed... there are two plastic things attached to the carbs that have large knobs on top of them (visible from above with the seat removed... They say IDLE ADJ on them... HOWEVER; there are wires coming out of both of these devices and both wires have been cut..... (visible in the carb pic)

I promise it cranks second or third kick every time lol and it runs like a champ! It just looks like absolute hell

the hose its missing on the side of the carb is a over flow. any atv shop should have some rubber hosing laying around. and it looks like you have an adapter for a k&n id get one if i was you like stated with an outer wear. hangers are cheap look at ebay they have a good amount of stuff. also the boot from the airbox to the carb would also prob be on ebay or fro someone here. good luck o and get some different tires man that would fix all your traction issues. welcome!

I would hate to guess how much dirt and sand got sucked into the engine running it with no air filter, expecially with a dirty air box like that.

OMG!!!! I just passed out due to the fact it has no filter on it!!

Well it has no boots from the air box to the carbs... Thus it could have had an awesome air cleaner on it and still made no difference hehe... Anyhoo i've got got the boots & air cleaner on order from a member... The times I ran it it was wet and nasty out there wasn't any dust flying around... How long has it been run without boots/air filter? No idea.

Go back to where you bought this, and kick the homo in the stones!!!

Ok man, you got some work ahead of you. You need a new airbox, and maybe boots from the carbs to cylinders. You have to check them for cracks and what not. The crap on top of the carb caps it TORS, and it's a problem waiting to happen. Search TORS removal on here, and think about doing it. You need to go through the carbs to clean out what has to been sucked in to them when it was run with out a filter. For pipe hangers, hook up with Alf's Toy Box on here. He's got some nice stuff for sale at good prices.

Think about doing a compression check to find out the health of the engine.

That is a serious case of abuse and neglect. Call C.P.S. on his ass.

Is it me, on the second picture it look like your silencers is missing the outlet pipe. I cant tell but is the cross over tube missing. Best money you could spend is on a Clymer service, repair and maintenance manual, some member know were you can download it. The wire cut, plastic thing with knobs you had mention is called T.O.R.S. its a safety system, so when the throttle sticks it will shut of the ignition. Get a removal kit, makes tunning and working on the bike easy.

Well Welcome to the HQ. Have fun with your banshee, or money pit as some of us like to call it.
