Smokestack Posted January 31, 2010 Report Posted January 31, 2010 While tearing my shee apart i have a few issues. The steering stem wont come out. I took the bolt off the bottom and everything. I do have a clymers. Also. The top stem clamp was super tight. And when i got it lose the stem went forward like 3 inches. So im sure the frame is bent somewhere. Is there a way to fix this or just start looking for a new frame As you can tell i have started to strip the multi layers of paint already Quote
BSHEE400 Posted January 31, 2010 Report Posted January 31, 2010 flip the frame put a nut on the end of the stem and use a heavy rubber mallet on it, you should probably replace the bearing and seals while you have it out. as for the frame the upper hoop looks good so i think the part of the frame that holds the bearing has some how been bent upwards, that's assuming your stem is straight Quote

The shaft seems straight as far as i can tell. Its really hard to push it back against the frame. And when i do push it back the piece where it mounts to the frame moves a little with it. So it does seem like its bent Quote

Looked like someone had already beat the crap outta it and mushroomed the shaft that goes into the bearing. We used a dremel to smooth it and it came right out. Now i have one of those swing arm bolts that wont come out no matter what. That doesnt worry me though. The part on the frame for the steering shaft is bent. Has to be. Looks bent. Now i just gotta figure that one out to get the right angles and stuff. And make it so its strong since i dont wanna go through this again. When I tore apart my bike, the problems were never ending, but when you do get everything back together it will be good to know that you have a solid frame and all of the issues are addressed. If you want to bend the steering hoop back, grab some 2x4s and a bottle jack, set the 2x4s up in the frame, so the bottle jack will push the steering hoop up, and when you get it where you want it you may also want to weld up some gussets. Here's a pic of how I did mine. (I'm not sure why they look so bad, I guess it just cleaned up a lot when I PCed it.) As long as the frame isn't cracke dor broken, everything can be straightened. I wouldn't ditch it, as long as you have some patience its really not that bad to do. You may also want to guesset some other areas like the subframe before putting it back together, I know there are more then a few threads on here about gussestting frames. Quote

But my issue is the peice that has the bearing in it Looks like i have enough room to get my floor jack in there and crank on it a little Not sure if it will work but i give it a try. Also on the stupid singarm i have done alot of dirt bikes..never had this much trouble getting the damn bolt out Quote

-Herbie- Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 Also on the stupid singarm i have done alot of dirt bikes..never had this much trouble getting the damn bolt out dude i went through the exact same thing last week. worked on mine 3 days to get the swinger bolt out. i bought a rod to pound on, then a sledge and tried beating it out...no luck, then i bought a torch tried heat & beat...no luck. Then i decided to cut it out so i cut with snips and bent the dust caps back to protect the frame from the blade and cut between that cap and the swinger. In 20 minutes it was out. Can get a replacement bolt on ebay for $15 Quote
