toddyfresh Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Hey guys I just picked up like a 98 banshee from a buddy of mine. It has stage four jet kit with exhaust, carb setup, etc.. and I bought it having this issue. My buddy said when he was driving it it was like the quad slammed on the brakes and stalled. Now when we try to start it here are the issues i have. 1. The clutch cable is tight (not sure if thats how it was before) but also the quad wont move at all when i push the shifter in and quad is in gear. 2. The kick starter in free until you get 2/3 of the way down then its like it is jammed. All the gears seem to shift ok and he said he took the jugs off and pistons was fine and everything and that they moved freely.. Any help appreciated greatly.. Maybe clutch basket?? Quote
locogato11283 Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 sounds like you need to pull the clutch cover off and see whats going on in there. theres quite a few moving parts in there, so who knows but it sound like there might be an issue with the kicker gear.. if something broke, it could be lodged under the clutch basket. pull the side cover to check this.. here are some thing youll wanna do. 1. drain the tranny oil 2. drain the coolant 3. depending on your setup, it might be easier to take off the footpeg for access to lower bolts 4. take off the kick starter 5. take off the front coolant hose that should be about it. be careful not to lose anything that may come out once you pull the cover off. toddyfresh Posted October 6, 2009 Author Report Posted October 6, 2009 so i wanna take the cover off by my left leg if sitting on bike or the right leg where shifter goes in? Quote
locogato11283 Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 the kick start side, which is the right side if youre sitting on the bike. all of your clutch components are on the kickstart side. the only things on the shifter side are the stator and sprocket. Quote
toddyfresh Posted October 6, 2009 Author Report Posted October 6, 2009 ok thnanks man ill let u know what i see Quote
toddyfresh Posted October 7, 2009 Author Report Posted October 7, 2009 ok guys i took my side cover off today and i have some issues. it seems the tip of the clutches broke and the basket broke a piece off and got caught between the clutch basket big gear and the gear to the right (idler gear?) anyways it chewed up the two gears a little bit and im guessing thats what happened.. i also took the top end apart and piston look good a lil black but nuttin bad. i couldnt get the jug all the way off because i couldnt move the pistons because of the gear im assuming.. So my questions is would i be better off rebuilding it or buying a used bottom end off ebay and using my top end.. Also do u thing i caused any damaged to the crank with this happening ?? thanks a million Quote

Dude, I'm really confused. The idler gear is to the left of the clutch. The shifter goes in on the left side. What? Quote

Id start with fixing everything that got damaged when your clutch took a shit, meaning under the cluch cover.Good luck Quote
toddyfresh Posted October 7, 2009 Author Report Posted October 7, 2009 Sorry guys I had my nephew typing it while I was washing my hands. Its not the idler gear that is fine. It is the crank gear and the gear behind clutch that got jammed.. I got the small crank gear if you know anyone has an old clutch basket i need one.. Any other advice? The pistons and that look good some carbon as usual it was rebubilt last year.. Quote
Bill Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Make sure the crank seal is still good. Your better off getting an aftermarket clutch basket, stock baskets are rivited on that gear. Quote
toddyfresh Posted October 7, 2009 Author Report Posted October 7, 2009 My buddy got another just the basket so imma use his basket and my pressure plate and get new clutches.. They just go on pretty easy right.. Justalternate the two right.. My buddy's Banshee did this and it cracked the outer race of one of the bearings- I don't remember if it was a crank bearing or the tranny shaft bearing. We didn't find the crack until we split the cases, because he wanted to look things over because it had been several years sinse the motor was apart. My point is look EVERYTHING over very carefully. Good luck. Quote
