intense98neon Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 This is what I have: 4 mil crank, still running the spacer plate until I get it ported and head cut. I have not found any leaks on the engine. Single carb with a 35mm PWK. Both sides have spark when pulling both plugs and laying them on the motor. Left seems to be ideling just fine, and gets hot after a little while of ideling. Right side just smokes, but does not get hot at idle. Seems that it does kick in when revving up, but never stops smoking. Compression is 140 left / 145 Right. When we replaced the crank I got the comment "I am suprised this stator still works" It does look a little dirty and such, but still puts out, because I have spark and lights, right? So.... could it be the coil? CDI? Stator? I am looking up to the masters of the Banshees for the answer. I have searched, and they all say to start with the carbS... I only have one, so I believe that can be taken out of the equatuation.... Please help. Thanks, Brad Quote
doorslammer Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 swap the spark plug leads over and see if the problem follows it. how did you check for an air leak? did you do a leak down test? right side being tranny crank seal. could be getting oil into it and burning smokey. Quote
intense98neon Posted September 17, 2009 Author Report Posted September 17, 2009 I have switched the leads many times, and the problem is always on the right side. I only sprayed starter fluid around the motor when it was ideling, and did not see any change. I also do not believe it to be the reeds because I have also swapped them, and they looked fine. Quote
XxMeltIcexX Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 If you switched plug wires and it still does it on the right then its not electrical. Hows the reed look on the right side? Quote
XxMeltIcexX Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 Still cant edit posts.... Wanted to add, you still need to do a leak down test, spraying ethel around the cylinders is only above, could be leaking at crank seal. Quote
XxMeltIcexX Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 LOL I read your last post AFTER posting, this damn site needs to get the edit fixed!!!!! Scratch the reeds then, youve switched spark plugs right??? Quote
pr0blumz Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 Have you checked your harness for bad wire(s)? Quote
Larry's Shee Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 Clean all poles on stator, inside of flywheel, and two lugs on outside of flywheel, gap pickup at .018-.020. That's what it took to fix son's shee. It appeared to have spark on both sides. Quote
intense98neon Posted September 17, 2009 Author Report Posted September 17, 2009 I have switched the spark plugs many times, and added new ones as well. I will clean the flywheel, stator, gap it and see what it does. I have not inspected the wiring harness but believe it to be in good shape. What I was kinda thinking is that maybe it only had enough spark for 1 plug, and it was taking the path of the least resistance (left side maybe for some reason). I will just have to clean it up and see. Quote
dajogejr Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 Sounds like the crank seal is seeping tranny fluid in the right cylinder to me. The ignition side and lighting side of the stator are separate. Just because one is working fine doesn't necessarily mean the other is. Since you swapped leads side to side and it did nothing, it's not the coil or coil end caps. Bad stator or crank seal is my guess. Quote
dajogejr Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 The right side having 5 more PSI could be a sign too (with tranny fluid in the cylinder, it'll seal more and cause a little higher reading) Quote
intense98neon Posted September 18, 2009 Author Report Posted September 18, 2009 Well I took the flywheel off, cleaned if all up, and the stator (wire brush to all stator ends) put it back together and it was gapped at .020 for the pickup. I started it up and it seemed to be running on both cylinders, but I did not run it for long because I did not want to wake up the neighbors. I will see if its better tomorrow. If not I guess I will be building a leak down tester. Quote
intense98neon Posted September 22, 2009 Author Report Posted September 22, 2009 So Sunday we were at the dunes for about 9 hours, and just like it always does, smokes like hell from the right cylinder, but once its warm, there is no more smoke. I am leaning on the seals. I guess I will have to redo them sometime, maybe this winter! Quote
