im in the middle of rebuilding my top end for the first time and i have a few questions about some things, Ive been reading up on everything i can to help the build go smoothly. but as Ive been reading i have come across a few horror stories that are making me more nervous than i really want to be.

what is the piston ring end gap supposed to be?

which direction do i point the ring gap?

should i mix my gas with a little more oil for the break-in period? 20:1 or so? i usually run 40:1.

i have heard about lubricating everything as it goes together, but im too too clear on that one, what do i need to do about that?

during the break in would i let the shee idle for about 5 minutes, then let it cool and check all bolts and retorque everything. and do that a few times (2-3) then i would ride around nice and easy for a tank, at no more than half throttle.

would that break in be good and safe?

if anyone else has any other ideas and pointers i would really appreciate it.

Lube as you go. Break in with at least 32:1. Run full tank of gas through it for break in. heat cycles have always worked for me. Start it keep it at idle until hot. 3-5 mins. shutdown let sit until cold again. do that 2-3 times. then start givin it a little throttle and back off, throttle back off. let cool. just keep increasing the rpms after each cool down. Dont hold it at steady rpms always keep the throttle moving. make sure to let it cool all the way down each time.I like to use this method until about half throttle then I start to ride slowly. after youve done that for what will seem like ever ride it nice and smooth throught the gears and go in and out of full throttle on and off. Go through a tank of gas like this and youll be fine. Just take your time and dont get excited and whined it out too soon. Heat cycles and proper breakin are key to a long lasting rebuild. IMO.

should smoke a little for sure. ecspecially if you lubed up everything as it went back together.

I've always heatcycled a couple times and then rode it hard like I normally would. Have never had any problems.

As for the piston ring gap it should say on the package the rings came in.
