Sammy Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 Well Saturday night I took the trail setup to the track just for a little fun. Even though it was pretty slow, I think I may have had to much fun. I believe I have been bitten by the straight line bug. I now have a list of parts to more so tailor my ride to the 1/8 mile drags. I'm needing some help on a few thing. Gearing being the most important. Currently I am 15/50 with a 22 inch tsl's for hill climbs. I was launching in 2nd and crossing the traps in pretty much topped out in 6th @ 71mph. The best run of the night was a 9.34@71mph. That was with a dismal 2.1 60 foot time. So here's the plan I'm ditching the 22's for a pair of 20x10x10 American Racers on Douglas .125's and also ditching the heavy ass front rzr's for some scooter tires on 4 inch Douglas's. I'm gonna do either a 6 or 8 over swing arm with no wheelie bar, but the front and rear will be strutted. So basically I need to know a good starting point on my gearing for an 1/8th mile. I don't think I have the power to pull the near 2:1 ratio that most people use. I have pretty basic bolt on's with no port work or carbs and a mid range orientated pipe setup. Quote
dragbanshee98 Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 (edited) yea that gearing is way off for that application try like a 16/40 to start and see how that works for ya... make sure to get more gears cause the mods will be soon to follow once u start racing and want to compete with larger bikes Edited July 13, 2009 by dragbanshee98 Quote
x_doug_x Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 umm, to the o/p i think you are a little off, you can't possibly be geared low enough to miss a complete gear. i trap 65-67 with the clutch slipping in 3rd 4th and 5th with 6 left after i cross the 8th. whatever the last gear is was still left after the 8th Quote
Sammy Posted July 13, 2009 Author Report Posted July 13, 2009 To the above poster with the quad geared like it is now the top speed is right around 74-75 mph. I was launching in second gear to keep the front end down. It crossed the traps in 6th gear at 71 mph. I went ahead and ordered a 38 tooth rear sprocket. That's pretty close to 16-40. I'll give that a try this coming weekend with some 20's on it instead of the 22's. Quote
dragbanshee98 Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 let us know how it works out for ya  Quote
Sammy Posted July 14, 2009 Author Report Posted July 14, 2009 Will do. According to the gear vs speed calculator I should be able to launch in first and go through the trap in the top of fifth . Maybe it pick a some et. Quote
dajogejr Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 In the 8th mile, if you have 6th gear and you're not wound out totally to the top of 6th gear, you're missing ET and MPH. 15/38 Is a good start. You'll HAVE to use 1st to launch in a stock port motor with that gearing... Unless you're 300lbs...you should be able to hit mid 70s on a bone stock bike in the 8th. Quote
Sammy Posted July 22, 2009 Author Report Posted July 22, 2009 Well they discontinued the 38 sprocket I ordered, so I ended up going with 16/40 instead. But I also need to do some other things to the bike before I took it back to make safer to ride. It needed front wheel bearings terribly bad and the front a arm bushings were shot. So I've got it down to the frame right now. I decided to go ahead and take some weight out of the frame, ditch the front brakes, picking some spindle mount wheels up from John @ sand toyz, +8 swing arm, and I'm currently trying to purchase a set of GRR sbsf oof's from a guy on AtvDragRacers. So we'll see how it runs this go around. Quote
dajogejr Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Sammy... I have to be honest. With no port work and stock carbs...those pipes aren't going to do anything for you. Shaving the pig down....GREAT idea. Check with your track to make sure they allow the removal of front brakes. Some tracks they are mandatory....and they sometimes make you put a chain guard on as well. Just something to think about. Just my opinion. Quote
Sammy Posted July 22, 2009 Author Report Posted July 22, 2009 Yea I checked about the front brakes at a few of our local tracks. There's not a track in a 70 mile driving radius to me that gives a crap about quads. All we have to have is a helmet, jacket, and long pants. Thanks for the advice on the pipes. I still think I'm gonna pick em up though. For 250 dollars I don't think I can pass them up, even if I don't use them right away. At least I'll have them for when I get some carbs and a drag ported top-end. Quote
dajogejr Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 That is a great point. They are a good drag pipe which my buddy swears by... Very good thinking process! Quote
