i didnt know 2-strokes needed a freshen up as often as they do and ive had alot of differant answers to this question, so i thought a poll would be easy to see what the average life of yee ol ring was, of course to the extreme drag/race motors it would be alot more frequent but it would be great if you guys would chime in aswell.

well, that's a hard one to vote for. simple answer is when the rings/cylinders are worn. every engine is different. if you have reason to suspect that it's time, ie. poor low rpm operation, abusive life like cheap oil, air leaks, dry starts, contaminants, etc. open her up and check. you can potentially go over 100 hrs on a good motor, or you can neglect one for 20-30. i have a blaster and king quad baught in 94, and the blaster is still running strong, and the suzuki needs rings.

Hard to answer that one. Could be less than an hour if the top-end was rebuilt poorly. From a diagnostic standpoint, this is why you should get an accurate compression test after a fresh rebuild is broken in. You can them gauge how worn your top end is down the road. I have about 40 hours on my top-end, always warm the bike up completely before riding, and haven't lost a pound of compression yet. I also did plug chops to make sure my mains were on spec. Do this crap and your top end will last a while!

whats the dry starting its early for me right now but i cant think of what your talking about besides putting a new top end in and not using any oil.

I haven't ever seen a banshee topend just wear out and get low on compression. If the compression gets low, its usually because something happened, like it ate some sand and the bore is scored. I voted for when it blows up.

had my 02 since it was new and still stock top end, ride in sand dunes couple times a year and trail ride with it! still 120 psi on compression! im sure theres around 100 hours or more on it

thanx peoples, i know there are horror man made errors but most of us try to keep our stuff in good order and build motors clean and well. but some who have built/freshened up a few motors over the years may have a rule of thumb, as dallasgdub and 105psi.

i should have added % loss of compression on the poll.

 

thats what i thought Snopczynski, tho time does take its toll generally a long time.

mine did last year. 7 years on a bore and the right cylinder becomes a little out of round. To answer the question of when, the answer would be when your foot starts to hurt from kicking over the beast.

My buddy builds race car engine for a living. He build his banshee back when I was in highschool and that shit is still on the same top end to this day. that was almost 8 years ago! He raced MX with that thing and still trail rides with it all the time. I can't believe it. I rebuild mine if it blows or about every 50 hours I'll throw pistons and rings in it. next time I think next time I'll give him my motor to build.

pulling it out of storage and just kicking it 'till it starts. it's even worse if you use starting fluid or strait gas to pop it off. of course, the oil you use will greatly effect this
