I was at Little Sahara last week and my kick starter and the sand didn't get along causing frustrations for myself. After riding in the sand for maybe 30 min. the kick starter would stick in and make it a bear to get out to re-start the bike. It got to the point by the end of the weekend that I had to carrying a pair of priers with me to beat and pry it out if i needed to restart for any reason.

I'm sure this has happened to many, but has it happen to this extreme. Is there anything i can do in the future to prevent this?

Thanks -

You can try to clean it out really good, or buy a rebuild kit!! If you take the big screw out of the base of hte kick starter, you can remove the ball and the spring!! Clean that really well and see if it fixes your problem, if not, buy a rebuild kit!! Just my .02!! Keep that thing greased really well too!!

Put some grease in there and put it back together with a thicker o ring or use 2 o rings. That will stop sand and dirt getting in and jamming it up.

I just see were you have an o-ring listed. Where does this go? That may be my problem, I don't have an o-ring anywhere on my kick starter. I looked up a rebuild kit and see the o-ring included in the kit. I might try this and see what happens.

At this point even the dust from trails will bind it up over time.

The o ring goes over the shaft on the smaller piece that bolts onto the bike. The spring and ball go into the shaft above the o ring and then the kicker slides over and is held in place with a screw.2 o rings make it a really tight fit and stops the usual rattling.

That happened to me after I lost my old lever and put a new one on it, I just jerked it out and kicked it down with my hand and sprayed some PJ1 chain lube in the crevasse and now it's smooth as glass.
