hi all, i recently purchsed an 01 banshee that was bone stock (outside of a K&N filter). bike has been running great and have had no problems starting or running. i should have left well enough alone.

 

i picked up a set of paul turner chrome hi-revs last week (with silencers for $300) and i just finished putting them on. i bought them from a tech at a dealership and he told me to put them on, remove the snorkel on the air box, and to switch to 260 mains. he was a good guy, and seemed to know his shit.

 

anywho, i got the exhaust on no problem, flipped the ignition coil over to clear the pipes (as recommended on the duncan website), and put the jets in by loosening the carb hose clamps, unscrewing the tors assy, turning each carb to access the bottom and removing the float cover. i then reversed the procedure for re-assembly.

 

now the bike won't start.

 

the carbs are in sync, i double checked all hoses are connected, and the throttle is working smoothly. i am (almost) positive that i plugged the coil wires back correctly to the coil and that i have the plug wires to the proper plugs. black wire to the label side of the coil and that plug wire to the right side plug (when sitting on bike). i verified this with a service manual and even tried reversing everything.

 

i pulled a plug and tried to check for spark by holding it against the cylinder head and kicking. i really couldn't see anything, but i'm not sure if the spark is obvious enough to be seen by one person while kick starting.

 

i ripped the gas tank off and began looking for pinched wires or loose connections. i found a disconnected harness that led to the parking brake (which the original owner removed). i tried plugging that in but got nothing. i tried unplugging the tors and got nothing. i'm starting to think i somehow ruined the coil, or pinched a wire. i don't have a voltmeter to test it, but i will buy one if there are no other obvious holes in my troubleshooting procedure.

 

did i mention that this is my first shee and i've never changed jets before? thanks in advance!

did you change your pilots?? they need to be 27.5. stock is 25..

 

 

also, what do you mean you flipped the coil over? it has to be grounded to those tabs. if you put it on top of them, chances are the paint is keeping the coil from grounding. thats where i would start, because even with the wrong pilot jets in, it should still start.

the coil will hit the right side pipe if you don't flip it. they actually tell you to do this on the duncan website. i hit the contact points with sandpaper before remounting.

 

i did not change the pilots, but will. thanks for the input.

Try switching carb slides with each other,cut on the slide faces the air cleaner

 

i only had one carb apart at a time, so i couldn't have got them backwards. thanks though.

just make sure you got down to bare metal.

Dont know if it would keep it from starting but did you put the 2" rubber hose back on the carbs "choke tube" hooks carbs together.

 

did verify. this hose is connected to both carbs. thanks.

i unplugged the 2 connectors near the carbs. i had not touched the black box near the coil. should i try that as well? thanks.

ooooh yah. if you unplugged the carbs, it will think it has a stuck cable, and shut off the cdi. unplug the box to disable the tors. :biggrin:

so i unplugged the main tors box as well and went to check for spark. i got it for the first time. however, after i put the plug back into the head and tried again, i got nothing. i believe i have a problem with the coil and moving the plug wires around gave me a good spot for a second. maybe i'm way off.

 

i got my hands on a voltmeter and checked continuity on the black and orange lead connectors. i got about 0.4 ohms. i then tried the plug connector and couldn't get anything on either plug. i believe i'm supposed to get 5K to 7K. i stuck a pin through one of the wires to check away from the rubber cap. still nothing.

 

i suppose i will try a new coil next. it just seems like a weird coincidence that as soon as i unplugged the tors box i got spark for an instant.

 

any more thoughts are more than welcome. thanks.

so i'm an idiot....

 

my left carb needle slide was not seated properly, thus making the TORS system cut off my ignition.

 

maybe this will help someone else down the road who is clueless like me.
