I want to take my J-arms off the shee. I have an '89 and I want to take them off and get them coated. I need to know how hard it is and what are the first few steps to getting them off. any info would be great!

You need a Clymers my man!!!

They arent bad though heres a list of what all needs to be done as far as I can remember. I wouldnt powdercoat them though, youll toast the ball joints. Paint would be your best bet. Anyway:

 

Remove the wheels (obviously)

 

Take off the caliper, 2 bolts on back side

 

Take off the hub, 1 bolt on outer side

 

Pull the ball joints, a 2 jaw puller works the best

 

Take the bolts off of the frame, should be 3 on each side total for J-arms

 

Take off the shock and you should be good to go.

 

Clymer can probably explain it better and has pictures to guide you along.

I was thinking more along the lines of paint I just wasnt sure. Is there a paint that would be stronger than others?

 

Also the 2 Jaw puller, where and for how much can I pick one up?????

DuPont Imron paint is pretty tuff, and you cant borrow tools fom Autozone. You have to put down

a deposit, but when you return them you get your card creditied back. Good luck... Remember,

your finished product is only as good as your prep work...

Clymers lists a weird way to do it, with an old flywheel puller, and different people use different ways. Ive had a lot of luck with the 2 jaw puller. You can buy a 2 jaw puller at Pep Boys or Vator Zone for like $20, and youll probably use it again. Get the smallest one you can find so you can fit it in there.

 

You might be able to find someone to PC them here, its just really really tricky, so I wouldnt have it done unless the person absolutely knows what theyre doing. As far as paint, Im not sure, Ive never painted any stockers, but I have used Rustoleum Hammered on other parts and it turned out pretty good.

to remove the ball joint from the spindle just hit the spindle with a ball peen hammer where the ball joint bolt goes in on the (side of the spindle) not the threads, this works everytime

 

and you cannot remove stock ball joints on these bikes

i get some stuff from carquest called rust seal. its about $20 a pint and you can thin it out and spray it with a gun or you can actually brush it on and its supposed to look good. ive painted two sets of a arms with it and havent scratched it yet. mdhc500 was right on about prep work. it can be tedious but if you want it to hold up then you have to take your time. ive never seen a rattlecan paint that would hold up on a arms unless you only ride sand dunes or something
