  1. Dont do that. When a plug comes loose the bike is trying to tell you to stop abusing it. A plug comes loose because of detonation. You are either running too much timing, too lean, or your head is cut too tight. You could also be running a fuel that does not have enough octane in it. If you would, let me know your setup. Tell me what carbs, jetting, head specs, what fuel, what ignition, and what the timing on the ignition is set at.
  2. Bet you that 20% is eaten up in a poorly setup clutch anyway. Or poor jetting and/or shitty gearing. Only time 5hp is going to help you is if you know what you are doing and have a well setup bike. 95% of the people dont. And the other 5% wont need decked cylinders...
  3. I sure havent seen any graphs of this particular motor setup. But i know what Dan is accomplishing with this configuration. The motor themselves are capable of any rpm really. Its impossible to tell without knowing what pipe they are using and how they are cutting the heads. That ultimantly is what derives the engine rpm. If i were to guess on the power they are making id guess anywhere from 3-5 more hp through the first 6500-7000rpm depending on pipe and only a few hpsacrificed on top. Again depending on pipe. Guys, please dont think that decking a cylinder to lower the cylinder a few degrees will cause a 20% decrease in topend power. We are only talking a few lost hp and a lot more mid. Again, you are shifting where the power is made, not losing it completely.
  4. Actually i believe the question was addressed. The cubs are decked for a few reasons. One to drop the trans and ex. timing. This will give a less pipey motor and more mid range. Benefits in riding this setup is for the woods riders they wont have such a violent power band. Price wise, the cylinders obviously cost some money but cost of port work is easily cut in half since they are great out of the box. I dont see any reason why you dont agree with what Dan is doing with this cylinder. 2005 cyllinder technology to replace an unmodified 1985 cylinder. Personally ive seen more extreme cases of "WTF were you thinking" but in this case the work was justified and had great results. So why argue? lol
  5. good to see everybody getting along a little better. Sand, a piston can have a postivie deck height as long as the ring doesnt come out of the bore (in simplist terms). You can take a stock cylinder, put a 4mm stroker in it and the piston will have a positive deck height of about 1.5mm or approx .060. This is how thousands of stokers are built and its perfectly fine. A good OTD estimate is 1100 complete w/o a crank.
  6. Top end for a cub is 900 plated and ported. No cheetah/cub is billet. They are casted. There are NO sleeves in a nikasil motor so there is NO leaking from the sleeve. Calvin is a good guy. if he see's a flaw in his cylinder he will replace it. No matter if it is decked, ported, dropped, ect. Calvin and Dan are great friends at any rate. So there is no questionability. You act like Dan is the only place to cut a dome. It isnt a huge secret. You have a multitude of aspects to consider, but any decent shop can cut a decent set of domes. So NO you arent stuck with just him. Every dome that is cut needs to be custom. Why? A dome doesnt run the same from elevation to elevation and fuel to fuel. Want more torque? Change the combustion. More RPM? change the combustion. More midrange? CHANGE THE COMBUSTION. A simple 17cc dome from trinity will never yield a great dome. Know something funny? The two greatest power gains in any motor are the pipe and dome, so why would you run a stock dome? its like running a stock pipe. Loco, the comment wasnt directed towards you. The quote was taken from our site then your site picked it up from there. So it was a generalization. Damn sandstar, you are just learning all kinds of cool stuff...imagine what you'd learn if you frequented my board...
  7. I never once came in here directing my post to one specific individual. Why do you make it your cause to keep this thread going with your constant insults and a general lack of knowledge with what is going on. The only thing that is in common between a viper and a wrx is that they both have 4 tires and wheels. Last time i checked we are talking the difference in motors by merely changing the rpm in which a motor makes power. Try keeping your comparisons in the same category smart ass. I gave you more then enough reasons why a nickle bore is better then a cast bore. Perhaps you may want to re-read my first post. But in response to the "why is a chrome bore so much better" question, its like teflon on a frying pan. NO STICK. Water jackets dont crack stupid shit. Especially on a cylinder that needs extremely minimal transfer work. Its not like you are hacking into one like a stock cylinder. Cubs are virtually set up port-wise right out of the box! LMFAO...sleeves in a nikasil bore? "Decking .050 won't affect any other aspect of the engine?? Remind me to stay away from whatever you are selling." Try reading my post again. Or better yet, tell me what parts wont work any more by decking a cylinder .050. LOL pipes not going to fit the exhaust flanges now? Are the carbs not going to fit in the intake boots? Boy, you are arguing with the wrong guy here. ONLY thing that changes is port timing and combustion. Which ive already addressed. "Don't threaten me or anyone else with being banned from another site because of what was posted here. Thats just stupid on your part." When you take a quote from our site to post on yours to talk shit it becomes my business and i can do what i will to the people who partake in it on our site. You wouldnt last on our site anyways, people tell it how it is and dont take sides with other people without having a solid foundation to argue on. Notice how quiet loco and the rest of the HQ'ers are on planetsand? Finally the reason i came in here is because Dan was being insulted. He is a huge asset to every part of our sport. From snomobiles, to atv's. No, nobody is hanging from anybody's dick, it is just common knowledge and it seems you lack quiet a bit of it.
  8. I got an email about this post much like dan and i want to put my voice in here as well. I dont post here much, often because of these childish bitching contests, but if anybody on here has a problem with Dan you can keep them to this forum and you will NOT return to PS. He is a good friend of ours and he is a huge asset to our sport. When he talks about toning down a cub cylinder to be more woods friendly. He is referring to decking the cylinders to lower the ex. and trans timings. Leaving a less peaky motor. Why would somebody do this? You can now run a trail-friendly pipe with a lower ex. You have the benefit of a chrome bore Lighter cylinders Better Cooling Better port layout Easier to port (saves end user money) Decking a cylinder .050 wont effect any part matching. Domes need to be cut reguardless. It wont affect reliaibility There is NO warrenty. Being that the builder told YOU that the cylinder was decked leaves you the responsibility at a later time to notify your new builder (if you so choose to have one). Throughtout the entire PS community Dan is by far one of the most knowledable people i have gotten to talk to. It is one thing when a builder can copy a cylinder setup and reproduce it and have a great running motor, but it takes another type of person who designed that cylinder and KNOWS why and how it runs how it runs; that is Dan. His name isnt as well known as some of the other builders, but that is simply because he turns work away, and on a frequent basis. He doesnt want to be a large shop because he does work by himself and he chooses to stay small. He is a family man; and I as well as everybody else should respect that. BTW, Dan does more then port motors. He builds pipes, builds custom domes from scratch and can even answer the phone when you call! How many in house builders do you know that can do all that? Few and far between. Last 350 motor that i saw of dans did 93hp on alk with inframe cpi's...
  9. 1250 JUST for labor is too much. You can typically find them for that ready to ship
  10. i have two cranks. One out of an 03 and one out of an 02. PM if interested
  11. ill be there
  12. yup. You can find stock cyls 20-40 over now for 200 pretty common
  13. well, luckily you impressed me I too pass up playmates daily.
  14. post a pic of you and your wife. If you are so eager to critique then lets see some pictures
  15. I doubt she'd need to prove anything to you...
  16. Cant really compare your porting over the internet because there is a lot more to porting that a camera or words cant describe. If you must send the entire motor to a reputable builder and see what they say.
  17. The way i see it is that you need a crank no matter which way you decide to go. A stock crank wont handle 80hp reliably, and a stroker is just a new crank in general. There are many other builders out there then A&S that have cubs in stock and produce just as strong motors.
  18. that and carbs homie. I can give you dyno sheets all day long. Hell i own the dyno. But in fairness to me i made that number after the 3rd pass BTW its sikgirl's motor just in case you want to give her a "hell ya"
  19. combustion is everything. You should really consider buying an aftermarket head. start somewhere around 194/127 and see how you like it. Everything else is up to you.
  20. Answer me this...do you think that running a carb that was designed for a 350cc engine that produces 30hp should be ran on a 400cc motor that produces almost 2.5x more power? What is the purpose of building up a stock air pump (30hp) into a bigger, stronger, more efficient air pump (80hp) if you cant feed air into it. Remember more air in=more air out=more power. Builder may be a great guy to you. But 75hp is pretty easily attainable out of a 4mm. heck i got 71hp out of my gf's bike i did for her and its still stock reeds, and t-5 pipes and on nobbie tires. And there isnt anything fancy or drag related on how i ported it. Add for VF3 reeds(3-5hp over stock), some CPI pipes (claimed 5hp over t-5s), and a more suitable dyno tire (3-4hp) and im in the 85hp range easily. But for the guy who asked the question. A set of 33-34mm carbs is what you are going to want. Expect to spend 150 on a set and another 20-30 on a throttle cable. Dont forget you'll need 80-100 in filters and outterwears. Stock carbs will work fine for you though, they will have good bottom end repsonse and good top end pull. A set of 34s will still have good throttle response but the mid to top end will pick up more power.
  21. smaller motor on nitrous would be better for you. Hard to hook up a big motor on asphault. And when you do it often will break stuff. It takes about 120 true hp to break a tranny on asphault
  22. Stock crank came out of an '03 and was replaced for a 4mm after 10 hours of use. Everything is cherry on the crank. I want to get 150 out of it. Thanks
  23. yup, that was all i was trying to say. Good call on not selling them though.
  24. too much for the carbs IMO. you can generally find pwks for about the same price.
  25. you can buy the top end ported for 900.
