  1. OK, thanks a lot. I don't mind spending a little more up front for parts that are a better solution ultimately.
  2. Hey, I'm doing some work on the engine and I thought about upgrading the stock, potentially leaky reeds to something a little better. I see people selling VForce 2's used at a good price and I was wondering if it's a decent upgrade or should I just go for V4's. These will eventually go on a Serval 4 mil so I have to keep that in mind as well. Thanks!
  3. OK, I'll figure out a source. So, next steps: Once I get the head cleaned up and back on, if the compression is still down, do I need to be looking at rings? Would case leak down effect compression? Thanks
  4. OK, I'll start with the obvious and replace the o rings, clean all the mating surfaces and put it back together. Run another compression check and see how that goes. I guess Chariot would be a logical source for parts since they sponser the forum?
  5. Took the head off today and found this: Left side (the misfiring side) is much cleaner than the right side. Piston cleaner too: The head looks OK: Found a crushed O-ring on the left side. Is it possible for them to blow out like this? I figure this is causing the compression leak and bubbles in the coolant.
  6. OK, just got back from tearing the engine down to some degree. Reeds in perfect condition. Will check o-rings tomorrow if I have time. I also have to look and see if I have a spare flywheel. I have a whole extra engine in parts but not sure of the FW. Thanks.
  7. So I've been chasing this for a while. Backfires out the left side, won't rev past 5500 RPM. What I've determined it's NOT: Stator (traded with another one) Carb adjustment (swapped carbs) TORS (removed) Parking brake sensor (removed) Ignition is OK (traded CDI boxes Weird stuff it's doing: Bubbles in the coolant Pops out the left carb and exhaust 135 PSI on the left, 175 PSI compression on the right. Flywheel almost looks like it's vibrating fore/aft when the engine is revved up but this may be an optical illusion because of the engine vibration due to poor running. The left exhaust pipe ACTUALLY TWISTS when the engine is revved, despite the fact that the pipe is secured and all the mounts are good. The right side is solid. So, I need a plan of action. Where else to check? The condition developed over time. Thanks for the assistance!
  8. Looks like a great time, I thought I'd make it there this time but the bike isn't quite ready for prime time yet... Maybe next time.
  9. OK, still working on this. Tonight, I ran it and I noticed that one side is kind of "purring" at a regular rate when idling while the other side is popping and cracking. I switched the wires on the plugs and the problem switched sides so I guess I'm looking at a different coil one way or another...
  10. Oh, I just noticed you're in Amelia, Ohio. I know a guy there named Tom Volz. Small world!
  11. I figured it was something like that. I'm measuring the 12v on the input side of the coil, not the output side. I'm just doing this as an experiment in digital control ofver spark and such... Thanks.
  12. Digital control of the ignition. My question was answered so I won't pollute this thread any more. Thanks!
  13. I'm always surprised you guys never get hassled by the cops...
  14. I've converted over to a full DC based CDI and added a regulator and battery so now, I suspect that the stock coil is fine but it's designed to work with a higher AC voltage and it's not working great with 12 VDC. The spark is almost invisible and the engine won't rev above around 2000 RPM. I can get DC coils for $10 so I might just try that. I'm trying not to mess up this thread with a lot of talk about ignition and coils so I posted a specific question in the other forum. Thanks for the input.
  15. This CDI unit Im running has a 12v saw tooth wave output. Any coil recommendations? I've been looking at a Cavalier twin output coil.
  16. I'm getting it sorted out bit by bit. Shoot, if it comes down to it, I'll just ride my F650GS down and mess around in the dirt on that!
  17. That makes perfect sense. I need to find a dual output coil that works on a 12v analog pulse. Thanks!
  18. OK, I checked the ohm reading on the coil and it comes out to .5 ohm. Is this correct? If so, my main question is still whether the coil is designed to operate at 12v or something higher. Thanks.
  19. Hey, I know it's been a while but I read back through the thread again and I have a question on the coils. Any particular reason you chose the Corvette coils? Is the stock coil not compatible with the 12v ECU? Thanks!
  20. Dude, I wish I was ready to ride... Well, I am, the bike isn't.
  21. The ends have been off and on many times but I'll give them a closer look. I'll also verify the ohm reading of the coil primary. Thanks.
  22. Hey, for reasons that will become clear at a later time, I have replaced the entire guts of the ignition system except the pickup coil and the spark coil. The new CDI is providing a perfect sawtooth wave 12 volt signal to the coil but the spark is weak to non-existant. Before I start checking everything I need to know if the coil is designed for 12 volts or something higher. If that's the case, it's working as designed and I just need a 12 volt coil. Thanks a lot!
  23. Running again on the new e-lectronics... Now for some tuning.

Hey, won't be quite ready this weekend. Hopefully by June. Have fun!

  24. Going to have to make this one. I need some motivaton to finish the electrical system on the bike...
