  1. It sounds like only one cylinder is firing too. Do you have spark at both spark plugs? Do either/both plugs look fouled? Have you replaced the plugs to see if that helps? Definitely check compression.
  2. Can you take a video of it? If it's revving all the way and just not moving, then the clutch is slipping. If it's not revving clean and that's what's causing it not to go, then it could be fuel or an electrical issue.
  3. Glad you got it fixed. Go have fun with it now.
  4. You can test your stator if you have an ohm meter. Also check the pick up coil gap. http://www.bansheehq.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=133650
  5. Since you mentioned you replaced the stator shortly after you bought the quad, which brand did you buy? I ask because I've seen some videos showing the same symptoms when you have a bad stator. Breaks up in higher rpm like hitting a rev limiter. Lots of guys on here say OEM or nothing when it comes to buying a new stator. Might be worth a shot to test yours just to be sure.
  6. Yep. Thanks bhq. You guys have helped me with figuring out some electrical issues on my banshee and now my buddy's. Just wish he'd throw some gas in it and let me know if it's all fixed. He's still gonna send it off to fast for a new top end since it's low on compression.
  7. Yep. Slides were in the wrong carbs. Just needs to mix up some gas for it and give it a try. Should be much better now. Thanks for mentioning it. Never would've thought they were in backwards as I normally just clean one at a time and assumed he did too.
  8. Have you addressed the wiring harness? As nasty as that one is, that would've been my starting point. Plugging a new stator into that mess may not help you even if the new stator is good.
  9. yep. I sent him the link to your thread so he'd know what to look for.
  10. Ha ha, no. We run 32:1, but his was smoking so much it seemed like it was burning more oil than gas. I told him to check the slides and haven't heard back yet. I'll check it out on the 4th and report back.
  11. Thanks for the suggestion. I suppose it's possible he swapped them around and we just never noticed the next 4 or 5 times we had the carbs off. He always pulls the carbs and cleans them at the end of the riding season before he puts it up for the winter. Would make sense since these problems just started and it was running fine last year. I'll run it past him. At least that would be a quick and easy thing to check. Thanks again everybody.
  12. Thanks for the replies guys. The slides are in the correct carbs. We had them out a few times during the carb swap and made sure they went back in the correct carbs. Crank seals was my first thought considering the amount of smoke, but his transmission oil is still full. I thought if the crank seals go bad it would suck oil from the trans and smoke excessively, right? This thing puts out a steady fog of smoke out of both silencers. It's always smoked a bit more than my banshees, but this is like he mixed 50/50 gas and oil. I even topped mine off out of his gas can without issue so I don't believe his premix ratio is the problem. It just seems like it's getting way too much fuel all the time. Runs great when under wide open throttle, but otherwise just bogs and goes through fuel like it's just dumping straight into the cylinders. He's decided to stop messing with it and is going to drop it off at FAST to have them diagnose and rebuild it. I was hoping we could dig in and find the problem ourselves but his schedule and motivation to work on it just aren't cooperating. Best to let a pro figure it out for him. Thanks to everyone that's offered advice.
  13. I agree with getting a new wiring harness. Looking at your pics it seems you have a short considering the burn marks. I picked up a brand new harness from jds customs and it's a real nice piece. I'd replace the stator and CDI now with OEM pieces too. Check the for sale section or put up a wtb ad. Good luck and report back once you get it fixed.
  14. Looks good. Thanks for the info about the graphics guy on eBay. I'll look him up.
  15. I lucked out and found a guy selling a NOS 95 rear fender on Ebay for $100.00. Just got it today and it's perfect. Way better than the $500+ it would have cost to change the color scheme. Now I just need to talk to somebody about making some replica graphics since Yamaha doesn't sell those anymore either.
  16. He's got another exhaust system in storage. We'll swap that out and see if anything changes.
  17. Thanks for the reply. I kinda figured it might be time for a new top end with that compression. Elevation is ~1300 ft according to Google and we ride at LSOK, which is almost 1500 ft. I have 290 mains in mine and was also surprised to see his only had 280's. I'm just curious, if the jets were too small then it would be running lean, right? The fuel fouling and excessive smoke and terrible fuel economy had me leaning toward too rich, but just didn't make sense considering his jetting. He hasn't changed any jetting and it ran fine last year before he put it up for the winter. This all started when he pulled it out of storage for our ride last month.
  18. My buddy has a '97 banshee with stock carbs, T5's, TORS delete, pro design adapter with K&N and stock cylinders with some porting. Has 280 main jets and 25 pilots. It has been running fine for the past 3 years or so and all of a sudden won't idle and just doesn't have any bottom end pull. With it in neutral it won't rev out clean, but go put it in gear and ride it and it'll come up on the pipe clean as long as you hang it wide open with a load on it. It also smokes excessively compared to mine and we both run the same 32-1 Yamalube R2 ratio. It just seems like it's getting too much fuel. It also runs through a tank of gas about 4 times faster than my '95 which has the same basic mods except mine doesn't have any porting done. He's had the carbs apart and cleaned several times and even swapped carbs, intakes and reeds with his other banshee and still has the same issue. Just seems like it's flooding and only runs decent if it's under wide open throttle. The plugs always come out fuel fouled where he hadn't had any problems with fouling previously. Any ideas on what could be the issue here? We ran a compression test and both cylinders show 105 psi. Seems a bit low as mine showed 120 psi with the same tester, but would that cause these symptoms?
  19. I just had the same thing happen with mine and it was the CDI. Had good compression, stator ohmed out fine, pickup coil gap was in spec. Replaced the wiring harness with a new one, replaced the coil. In the end, it was the CDI for me. I bought a procom from JDS Customs as it was much cheaper than factory OEM and I wasn't sure what the problem was.
  20. Replaced the cdi and the key switch works now.
  21. Cdi was bad. Let it warm up and she restarts fine. The key switch works now too. Thanks to John at jds for getting it to me so quickly.
  22. I do have a keyed ignition switch. It's actually brand new as well because the original key switch wouldn't kill the engine. The new one doesn't either. The handlebar ignition switch kills it just fine.
  23. As far as I know it's still the stock stator.
