  1. A top end job is pretty simple if you are mechanically inclined (at least on a 2 stroke anyway) You need to pull the cylinders and check the bore size before you order any parts. Find out the current size of the pistons in it and go up 1 size if there are no visible problems with the bore. I wouldnt pay the dealer to do anything if I didnt have to. You should be able to do the job for half the cost by doing it yourself, or better. If you look on ebay, there is a guy that will let you send your jugs to him, he will bore them and set you up with the proper pistons, rings, gaskets etc. That would take the guess work out of it for you. I think it was around $250 or so for the service and he had good feedback. PM me if you want more details on it. Dont sweat it, embrace this time as upgrade time since you are going to have it apart anyway. BTW the testers at sears are resonably priced, so look into it before jumping into a tear down. I was convinced that I was going to need a rebuild, and the compression test proved me wrong. Glad I bought it.
  2. Today is assembly day for a bunch of parts that i bought. When I got the bike I was told the top end was new. It didnt run right, so I found the stock filter and what got passed it. One carb was dirty and way out of adjustment. After confirming with a compression test that the top end was kind of fresh, I bought my parts. This is what I found when I took out the stock reeds. I thought the bike was stock except the person removed the baffles from the stock exhaust and put a boost bottle and reed spacers on it. Does this look like it may have a mild port job, or did somebody just clean up the inside a bit?
  3. yessir, genuine keihin's
  4. sounds like that one side is already blown. why take the chance of running it and possibly causing more problems and more money? I think I would buy a tester from sears and check it myself to make sure the dealership isnt trying to make a quick buck on me though.
  5. I still have plans to add a cool head with 20 or 21cc domes. Will this affect the jetting?
  6. I just looked at the jets in them. I have 48 pilots and 140 mains. I am thinking I should be around 150 with the mods. Hopefully the local shop will stock some jets. Does the pilot sound in the ball park?
  7. My concern is the jetting that came with the dg carb kit. The parts swap should take a few hours taking my time, assuming the ADHD doesn't kick in! Thanks for the reminder on the pics, as it looks kinda roached from the guy I bought it from. I have about 5 minutes ride time on it before I started ordering parts. I checked it over in more detail after I got it home and was not impressed with his maintenance on the bike. The compression tested fine, so this is where I am starting. The parts orders began and came in one by one. OHHH THE PLANS FOR THIS BIKE!!!! Elevation is sea level to 600 for the most part. To all the gurus on here, you rock. I have gotten so much info from this site, and I very much appreciate it!!!!
  8. I have received most of my parts and tomorrow is going to be a nice day in the 50's. <------Im excited about the 50's?!!? Anyway. Im taking an otherwise stock banshee and putting on these parts tomorrow. DG 28MM PWK kit K&N Pods with outerwears V-force 3 reeds Pro Circuit pipes and silencers. I have a Dyna FS and a Nology coil kit on the way. I am looking for anyone who has a similar combo to suggest the jetting for this combo. I assume that the DG kit will be somewhere close enough to get it running (I hope) I just need to hear it run again....Im jonesin' WILL SHE RUN TOMMOROW?????
  9. If the idle screws are all the way in, I would say thats a problem right there. I think the mechanic sounds like he wasn't too bright if he synced the carbs with the idle screws. Back the screws out evenly until you get a better idles speed, then adjust the air screws. Do a search on synching the carbs correctly, you should find more than enough info to get you in the ballpark. If you have issues with that, then you need to dial in the pilot and go from there.
  10. will i have to make jetting changes with increased compression? I have seen somebody on here that is running 19cc domes on pump gas. at what point does the reliability come into play?
  11. I just want to bolt it on without dealing with a machine shop until i do a topend replacement This one is fresh, so I just want to run it for now
  12. less than 1000 mainly sea level to 500' east coast
  13. Im sure everyone is going to shout head, but I had to ask. Since I dont know the go to parts list, if I buy a head, what brand and what size domes for hi grade pump gas? I ride woods and trails with an few races here or there. How much performance can I look to get? Current setup is unported jugs 28MM PWK's with pods V force 3's Pro Circuit pipes and silencers. Im more into go than show, but I dont want to assume that all heads are the same. Do aftermarkets keep the bike running cooler? I DO NOT WANT TO CHANGE STUDS!
  14. Why would the jetting be that much more critical? I understand why its there, but does it really function like they claim? I guess I just dont see the need if the bike is properly tuned.
  15. It may be a stupid question, but what if they were capped off or closed? Search didnt turn up anything for me, so I was just wondering if they really make any differnce at all?
  16. Im trying to buy a dyna FS ignition. I was told the bike was a 99, but I just want to verify. How can I find out?
  17. I will look into the powder coating. I think it may be the answer im looking for depending on cost.
  18. I have a set of pipes that have some rust. I have access to a sand blaster, and was kicking the idea of hitting the pipes with it. Has anybody ever done this to their pipes and if so, what did you put back on them? Im not looking to send them out to be re plated or chromed. I dont mind the look of nude pipes, but I just dont want them to become rust buckets.
  19. I just purchased a carb kit off of fleebay that looked generic. When I received it, it actually a kit from DG Performance, that also came with a new throttle. I paid $210 shipped to my door Im stoked!! Hopefully the jetting will be in the ball park to get going with. I am putting these on a stock banshee with a set of pro circuit pipes and silencers. Does anybody have an air filtration suggestion? I will be in the woods and have a stream or mud crossing from time to time, but I dont need to romp through them. I would be more than happy to putt through if any certain air filter will make that much of a difference. I will be adding the vforce 3's and an ignition very soon. I just hope this setup will run better than stock....
  20. Stock banshee at the moment. Parts on the way.... new 28 PWK's pro circuit pipes and silencers K&N filter, lid removed. VForce 3's will be added within a week or 4 I just want to know who has a similar setup and where should I start with the jetting? I want the thing to at least start when I bolt it together. Thanks all!!!
  21. The first thing I would check is the plug on that side. See if its fouled, and if so, check for spark with a new one. If everything checks out, I would open the carb on that side to see if something is plugging up the jets like dirt. Did you make sure the slide was moving up and down on that carb? Thats the basics, if everything checks out from there, I would do a compression test.
  22. I have decided on the pro circuits as a matter of fact  Where can I find the best deal on a set?
  23. I am looking at the Fattys and a set of pro circuits right now. I have never used anything other than FMF's in the past, but Im not opposed to change. Thanks for the help. I would love to hear from someone that uses the 28MM pwk's
  24. Im thinking more of a midrange pipe. I can fan the clutch, but I dont want to loose the top end power. If I went with a lowend pipe, wont that kill my top end power totally?
  25. Ya lost me on the last one...whats a shift star?
