    Check the crankcase oil drain plug.If its the problem replace the copper seal washer and torque to correct spec.

    The metal cover your talking about is the Flywheel.To remove you need to take the large nut off the center.Airtools work best!Then use the proper flywheel puller to remove. First use a continuity tester to check the stator as said before! Follow the instructions given by BenB to check the continuity!

    Sounds like a possible problem with the stator on the side that supplies power to the engine as the lights run off a seperate circuit.There is a thread in the repairs and mods forum on how to test it... Hope this helps
