TeamRealtreeHD Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 What are you guys using to measure the ring at the base of theplug when you chop it? What kind of measuring tool/device? Does anybody have pics of a good ring that I can compare mine to? Or something that is really close? Quote
dajogejr Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 A dime is one mm thick, roughly. I eyeball it. Quote
TeamRealtreeHD Posted August 20, 2008 Author Report Posted August 20, 2008 shee4speed... I need to chop a few at the end of the week (Thursday or Friday). I plan on doing 2-3 chops on either Thursday or Friday. I want to test 3 sets of mains to see what is the best. I only did one at a time, sidposing the plugs, and not being able to compare all 3 at the same time. I was to do that, especially before the weahter cools down. That is why I want to do it this week. I want to jet it spot on right now as this is my prime riding temp and weather. So when it gets warmer, it will richen just a hair, not much. And I don't ride in anything cooler so I will be good. I know it is close... really close right now. But I want to compare a few different mains... just experiment a little. Maybe on Thursday or Friday you fellas can take a look at the plug chops and give me your input as well. Most wouldn't complain with the way the bike runs or the way the plugs look.... but I want to make sure that the right size is definately in there. So I will post pics for everyone here to take a look at. I plan on testing: *158 mains- Size bigger than what is in it now *155 mains- size in it now, and running great, plugs burning nicely *152 mains- 1 size smaller than what is in it now I will gap 6 plugs between now and then and get them ready... I have been eyeballing it too, but I want to get really specific here... Someone else told me a dime too... that is what I used when I first started chopping plugs on this motor. I marked a brand new, never used NGK that I chopped and measured with a dime. I have been eyeballing and using that plug as a reference for where the ring should be. This has been my method, but I thought today "that is kind of not accurate". But I guess it kind of is. 1mm isn't that big and a dime can't be that far off... But I know a dime is almost exactly 1mm thick. Just thought maybe someone had a measuring device of some sort. So I was wondering what everyone else did. I didn't know if there was any guages out there. So when it gets warmer, it will richen just a hair, not much. And I don't ride in anything cooler so I will be good. Man, I just go on tangents sometimes... sorry for getting off topic there. But what is everyone's method? We have a dimex2 so far... and it is ironic, because that is what I have been using. Quote
jbooker82 Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 I just eyeball it. You will know if it is rich or lean once you get a couple sets chopped. I run mine for about .5 mi wot to make sure I get a good chop. josh Quote
TeamRealtreeHD Posted August 20, 2008 Author Report Posted August 20, 2008 Yea, I usally go 1/4 through .5 to get a good one. I have the space to do it too so all is good. Plug chopping is fun! Quote
