mdhc500 Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 I am by no means at this point interested in turning my bike into a drag bike, it will allways be a trail bike. But if I wanted to go to my local track on the weekends and race some sleds, bikes, and the local HS kids I was wondering what a few simple things I could do might be? Such as tires, clutch, reeds, and gearing? I dont want to get drag porting, change the suspension, invest in drag pipes or any of that, I'm just curious as to what some low $$ mods or things I could swap in and out in a half hours time to switch from trail to track might be that would make the experience more fun??? I do plan on getting some sort of port work done this winter anyway, but not for the purpose of drag racing. This would only be for pure shits and giggles and something to do with my boys... Current setup: 2006 stock motor, stock timing, stock gearing Cool Head 19cc domes 155+ psi R&L FMF Fattys & Silencers Boysen Reeds on/in stock cages K&N Filter airbox lid on Run 50/50 mix of 94 oct & Sunoco 110 Thanks guys... Hilarious Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 probably one of the easiest things you could do is make yourself a set of struts. head out to lowes and pick up a couple of pieces of 1" square tubing. works great. Quote

Sorry if this is a dumb question... I totally am clueless when it comes to drag setups... Quote
mdhc500 Posted August 18, 2008 Author Report Posted August 18, 2008 again... This is just for fun... Quote
KaosBanshee44 Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 Struts are the complete opposite of shocks. You have no "shock" or movement with stuts your basically making your bike a rigid. You will NOT see struts run on trail bikes ofcouse but you will see it alot with drag bikes with wheelie bars and so on. This is a strut for my motor that will give you a idea of what a strut is. I had someone make this for me to keep my motor from twisting in the frame since my main motor support that goes from the bottom rail to the top rail is cut out this keeps it from twisting. The only people i know that run these are Dave and I and the only reason why i'm gonna run it is because of Dave he talked me into it...lol This strut connects to your top chain roller and is mounted to the cases behind the stator. shanYE west Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 I am by no means at this point interested in turning my bike into a drag bike, it will allways be a trail bike. lol Thats what we all said... Next thing you know your buying a 4 stroke for trails and the shee is full tilt dragger. Becarefull.. you hit the track.. you might catch the sickness.. Quote
mdhc500 Posted August 18, 2008 Author Report Posted August 18, 2008 Yeah, the fact I am curious on what "little things I can do" instead of just for fun as is is probably a bad sign. Seriously though, with my setup, what would be a good sproket combo for the 1/8th, and would little stuff like clutch, reeds and timing help? Also I would be interested in asphalt tires, etc... Any good pointers? Quote
bigboybanshee Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 If you aren't wanting to change anything major, just little stuff in 30 minutes or so, the best bet would be to remove anything you can to shave weight...front and rear bumper, heel guards, nerf bars, etc. That'll pick you up the most, maybe use a ratchet strap to compress your shocks to lower the bike, seen several people do it but I wouldn't...just making that suggestion and will let it be at your discretion... Watch out about being curious...curious sent me from this: to this as fast I could afford it, lol: Quote

375hp banshees Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 lol Thats what we all said... Next thing you know your buying a 4 stroke for trails and the shee is full tilt dragger. Becarefull.. you hit the track.. you might catch the sickness.. I heard that ...if you can fab at all , make a wheelie bar, buy some tires & youll have fun; until you get the sickness... bars tires & struts are quick & easy to switch back & forth... depending on how you launch you should pretty clos w/ stock gearing... oh by the way, there is no cure for the sickness, so beware (well except for your wallet). have fun ! ! Wildcardracing Posted August 19, 2008 Report Posted August 19, 2008 +1 for struts, that's pretty much all I do to convert my duner into a drag quad for the occassional sand drag. Helps your launch and shave a lot of weight ditching those heavy shocks and springs. Quote
mdhc500 Posted August 19, 2008 Author Report Posted August 19, 2008 Does anyone have any photo's of some struts they fabbed? Do you want the a-arms level? And you dont want any shocks in the front? What about the rear shock, what setting do you want that set to? Just curious... Thanks... Quote

Thanks... like i said go to lowes and get some 1" square tubing. lol to get the front a-arms level make the front struts 12" eye to eye. that is drill (2) holes in the tubing @ 12" apart. as for the rear strut you may want something adjustable so you can play with the angle on your swingarm to adjust how hard your bike will hook on the track. works great, cheap and easy to change out. Quote
