Right side carb is pissng out gas and cylinder isn't firing

got a bit of a problem. the right side carb was pissing out gas out of the upper overflow tubes. i took the carb bowl off and cleaned it. if i turn the carb upside down, the floats sit fairly level. put the carb back together and now the right side isn't running right. it sounds like its trying to fire but it won't. ever 2-3 seconds it'll let out a popping sound with a puff of smoke (thicker than the left side).

what the hell could it be? i tried a few different (new) plugs. compression tests shows 140 psi on that cylinder. tonight i'm gonna try swapping the plug wire caps to see if that helps. can i cross the wires? wasn't sure if that would mess up the timing.

i haven't ran it since november and it ran perfect then. i ordered two carb rebuild kits (might as well do both).

any other troubleshooting tips that i can try? i did a search and found a couple threads where people were having similiar issues. but... the thread starters never updated if or what fixed the problem.

anyone have any insight?

i was thinking maybe the float valve isn't closing all the way so fuel is just being continuously pumped into the carb. that must be what's causing the leaking from the upper overflow tubes. but... if the fuel is constantly flowing into the carb, it must be flooding the cylinder. in turn... that's what would cause the right cylinder to not fire right. way too much fuel so it won't fire properly.

am i on the right track?

That sounds right. The float is either sticking or it is set so that is not closing the inlet completely.

Take the bowl off with the carb upright and hold the floats up while putting liquid (water, gas, beer, whatever) in the fuel line and see if it comes out the inlet. It should start coming out when the floats are about paralllel. If it comes out before the float is lowered that far, that is your problem.

You chould check the rubber part of your float needle and make sure it's clean and free of debris in your carb. Then you should bend the tab a little bit on the metal part that the float needle hangs off of. With your carb sitting upside down you should bend the tab downwards just a bit. There is a carb faq around here somewheres that shows pictures. I had the same problem and that fixed it.

Im having the exact same problem with my single 35PWK. I know its the float, I havent tried the water trick yet but next time I am. and Ive tried bending it and making sure the needel that attaches to the float was clean but its still pissing gas out of the top overflow. I dont know what the hell Im doing wrong. Im taking it to my mechanic if I cant get it next try tomorow or saturday I sure hope nothings worn out I want to ride this weekend.

alright... i got a carb rebuild kit and replaced the float valve. no more leaking fuel but the right side still isn't firing. i pulled the plug and it was dry. so, it's not getting fuel. i pulled the carb and replaced the pilot jet. still nothing.

tonight i'm gonna check the reeds. if nothing stands out, i'm gonna swap them and see if the problem moves to the left cylinder. if not.. i'll try swapping the carbs. i've haven't looked yet, but can the choke assembly be moved over to the right carb? haven't checked to see if the carb is threaded.

found the problem!!!!!

i pulled the reeds. they looked good but i cleaned them and hit'em with light compressed air. put them back in but swapped them. the right to the left and vice versa. sure enough... the right cylinder runs fine and the left one doesn't.

weird that i've installed them only less than a year ago and one already went bad.

oh well...

the VF3 are a great setup, but it sure does hurt the wallet replacing the petals! Are they noticeably worn? You will have to take the petals off to see the underside where they rest against the cage.
i haven't pulled the petals off yet. but... they're not noticeablly worn at all. they look pretty much the same as the petals on the other reed.

you won't be able to easily see the undersides of them unless you take them off. Did you swap the intakes too? Just seems weird there is no noticeable damage to the reeds and that is causing the issue.
all i did was swap the reeds.

you're telling me its weird. just looking at them, i couldn't see any difference between them. i just don't get it.

i orderd a set of replacement petals. so.. we'll see how that goes. i'll keep ya updated. :geek:

  • 2 weeks later...

well.... i received the replacement pedals. but they sent me the wrong ones.

looked over the petals since i had them off. i couldn't see anything wrong with them. they looked fine to me. i cleaned them off (weren't really dirty at all) and re-installed them. but... i flipped the petals the over. put everything back together and the bike runs fine.

i don't get it.
